Four Santa Clarita Teams Recognized In CIF Preseason Polls, Watchlists

The California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIF-SS) released its 2019 preseason top 10 polls for boys baseball and its 2019 teams to watch for softball and boys volleyball.

In the baseball rankings, Saugus High School came in at No. 7 among Division 3 teams, while Trinity Classical Academy represented Santa Clarita by taking ninth among Division 6 teams.

I didn’t realize we would be ranked, but we are and we accept where they have us,” said Saugus Varsity Baseball Head Coach Carl Grissom. “Rankings are just something to gauge where your team is, but it really doesn’t affect our day-to-day activities. This team will go as far as they want; they control their own destiny and that’s very exciting to me.”

Valencia High School contributed the only teams in Santa Clarita to find themselves on the preseason watchlists for softball and boys volleyball.

Valencia’s Division 1 softball program enters the season with high expectations, coming off a season in which they captured their third consecutive Foothill League title.

The team recently started their season off with a bang, winning their first non-tournament game of the season against Agoura High School, 13 – 1.

Likewise, the boys volleyball team opened their season with a win, defeating Oxnard 3 sets to 1 on Feb. 19.

Last season, CIF-SS officials released in-season top-10 polls for each sport beginning in March and updated polls on a weekly basis, and officials are expected to do so again this year.
