Week Seven

Valencia (4-3, 2-0): 29

Hart (4-3, 1-1): 27

No question, the game of the year to this point.

As even a Foothill League contest Valencia’s been involved in years, but the Vikings slip past the Indians, thanks to a 28 yard game-winning field goal by Ty Morrison with 41 seconds left.

Both teams traded blows all night long like a heavyweight fight, and it came down to a wild fourth quarter. Hart scored on a huge throw and catch from Zach Johnson to Ashton Thomas for the go-ahead 77 yard touchdown to take a 27-26 lead, but they failed to convert on the 2-point conversion that would have given the Indains a three point lead with 4:27 remaining. It proved to be a costly missed opportunity.

It came down to execution on offense in crunch time, and Valencia made big play after big play on the game-winning drive; however, it looked so unlikely with the way the drive started. Penalties on three of the first four plays forced the Vikings into a 2nd & 30 on their own 37 yard line.

That’s when sophomore Zamondre Merriweather, who had an up-and-down game to that point with a touchdown catch and a couple drops, was at his best. Ryan Morrison found Merriweather on back-to-back plays to get Valencia to a 4th & 1. Mitchell Torres converted, and the Valencia offensive line continued to help churn out yards on the ground from there, leading to this:

Hart got the ball back with 41 seconds left, but failed to move the ball.

Make it 39 Foothill League wins and counting for the Valencia Vikings.

Canyon (2-5, 0-2): 11

West Ranch (7-0, 2-0): 36

The surprise of the season is still going strong, as the Wildcats remain undefeated with an easy home win over Canyon. They take on Saugus next before their two toughest games of the season against Hart and Valencia.

Can they get to 8-0 before a showdown with Hart?

Vasquez: 18

Trinity (5-1): 26

Senior quarterback Rick Roberts shined for the Knights, going 20-for-32 for 300 yards and three touchdowns.

Trinity’s defense is allowing only 18.8 points per game, and with the two fumbles they forced Thursday now have 20 turnovers on the season.

Saugus (3-4, 0-2): 7

Golden Valley (6-1, 1-1): 31

Saugus narrowly avoided the shutout, scoring with under a minute to play in the game as the Golden Valley Grizzlies dominated from start to finish.

Johnathan Kaelin had a bounce back night with three rushing touchdowns for the Grizzlies.
