Santa Clarita High School Football Preview: October 14 – 15, 2022

It is now time for teams to step up as the season-end is on the horizon. Rivals are renewed and perfection is on the line this week!

Here are this week’s match-ups:

Castaic (1-6) @ Saugus (5-2)

The Saugus High School Centurions are set to host the Castaic Coyotes after a great victory last week against Hart High School. The Centurions have had a pretty successful season, establishing their dominance on the field when it comes down to their passing game. Quarterback TJ Cataldi and wide receiver AJ Goodman had an amazing passing game against Hart, with Goodman getting 113 receiving yards. On defense, linebacker Deohn Turner had an outstanding game with 4 sacks on the Indians.

Castaic last took the field against Canyon High School in a loss where they were only able to get a field goal against the Cowboys. The Coyotes have had a pretty good running game this season as running back Jacob Pimentel averages 58.3 yards per game. Since opening their doors in 2019, Castaic has slowly started proving themselves on the field in their first season with a full schedule. Castaic is coming off a well rested bye week. The Coyotes will make their way to Centurion territory on Friday at College of the Canyons with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.

Hart (1-6) @ Canyon (3-4)

Hart will make their way to face their cross-town rivals Canyon. The Hart Indians are coming off a loss against Saugus where they were only able to convert two field goals. Junior quarterback Timmy Larkins has had a good season averaging 214.7 passing yards per game.

Canyon is heading into this game coming off a loss to Golden Valley. The Cowboys have had a great running game this season as running back Ganisten Turner is now averaging 136 rushing yards per game. The Cowboys had a good passing game against Golden Valley and will look to improve that against Hart on Friday. The Cowboys are set to host Hart on Friday with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.

Golden Valley (6-2) vs. West Ranch (8-0)

The Golden Valley Grizzlies will look to give West Ranch their first loss of the season as the Wildcats hope to remain perfect. Golden Valley had a successful game last week defeating Canyon, 14-12. Ranked 2nd in the Foothill League right behind the Wildcats, this game is a battle between the two most dominant teams in the Foothill League. West Ranch is definitely going to need to keep an eye on wide receiver Ajani Smith who has had a phenomenal season on both offense and defense.

The Wildcats are undoubtedly dominant in the Foothill League, ranked 1st in the league with an undefeated streak. The Wildcats are coming off fresh from a tough win against Valencia last week. Quarterback Ryan Staub had a glowing game with 256 yards from the young quarterback in 41 attempts. Cornerback William Seidel had 77 receiving yards from Staub, but it was the running game that really shined against the Vikings. Running back Tyler Scott had a grand total of 130 rushing yards. West Ranch is set to host the Grizzlies at Valencia High School on Friday with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.

Valencia (4-4) Bye Week

Valencia High School will be looking at a restful week as they have a bye week to rest up before their next game against Hart. The Vikings had a tough loss last week against West Ranch, but they will be looking towards the future as they stand in 4th in the Foothill League. The Vikings defense had a good game last week as cornerback Ralph Testa got an interception on Ryan Staub with a return. The Viking quarterback has gotten more agile in the pocket, running the ball more when he sees the opportunity for the 1st down. This week of rest could be exactly what the Vikings need to get right back on their feet for a potential victory in their next game against Hart on Friday 10/21.

Santa Clarita Christian (4-2) @ Leadership Military Academy (1-5)

The Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals will face another league opponent this week against the Leadership Military Academy Wolfpack. The Cardinals got a win over Desert Christian last week bumping them to 3rd in the Liberty League (8-man). Cardinal quarterback Cayden Rappleye got 157 passing yards on 11 completed passes. Cardinal wide receiver Eli Duhm got a total 105 receiving yards from Rappleye, scoring two touchdowns against the Knights.

The Leadership Military Academy Wolf Pack are coming off a 44-32 loss against Faith Baptist. Quarterback Gavyn Avery got a total of 150 passing yards. Gavyn Avery proved a strong running game as well with a total 84 rushing yards with one touchdown. Avery is ranked 8th in California’s passing game leaderboards with 1,004 total yards this season. Halfback J’wan Wilson ranks 15th in California with 55 total tackles, showing the defensive strength in the Wolf Pack. Santa Clarita will make their way to Vista Del Lago High School to take on Leadership Military Academy on Saturday with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.

Trinity Classical Academy (3-3) vs. Linfield Christian (2-5)

Trinity Classical Academy Knights are set to host the Linfield Christian Lions in their 3rd league game of the season. Trinity Classical Academy stands in 6th in the Mesquite League after their loss against Riverside Prep. Quarterback Noah Visconti had a good game however with a total 331 yards; however he did throw two interceptions, giving Riverside the upper hand. Wide receiver Rocco Izzo had an excellent game as well, catching 253 receiving yards from Visconti.

Linfield Christian is coming into this game after a 34-13 win against Arrowhead Christian. The Lions had a great passing game that Trinity will have to look out for as wide receiver Marcus Dylke got a total of 126 receiving yards from quarterback J. Aguilera against Arrowhead. Aguilera had a great game as well throwing a total 242 passing yards to his offense. The Trinity Classical Academy Knights are set to host the Linfield Christian Lions on Friday at Fillmore High School with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
