Santa Clarita High School Football Preview: October 20 – 21, 2022

The regular season is quickly approaching its end, high school football teams around the Santa Clarita Valley are looking to make a late push to climb league standings.

Here are this week’s scheduled games:

Castaic (1-7) vs. West Ranch (9-0)

Castaic has had anything but an easy season, with only one win under their belt, but they are the newest addition to the Foothill League, so adjustment can be difficult. From what we’ve seen from them in recent games, the Coyotes’ running game with running back Jacob Pimentel has proved essential for the Coyotes to capitalize on for the rest of the season. Wide receiver Gabe Gibson has also proved his dominance on offense averaging 41.7 receiving yards per game.

West Ranch on the other hand has had a perfect season so far, getting nine clean wins with no losses, and has given them at least a share of their 1st ever Foothill League Championship. If the Wildcats can maintain their undefeated streak, they are set to be the sole league champions. Anywhere on the field, the Wildcats have proved their the best, whether it’s on offense, defense or even special teams. The Wildcats served a sweeping win to Golden Valley last week, only letting them get one touchdown the entire game while they ran the scoreboard. Quarterback Ryan Staub had a smooth game last week, throwing no interceptions and averaging 179 passing yards. Castaic is set to take on West Ranch in a home game at Valencia High School with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Saugus (6-2) @ Canyon (3-5)

The Canyon High School Cowboys are set to host the Saugus High School Centurions after a devastating loss against Hart last week. The Canyon Cowboys were only able to score a touchdown in their game against Hart while the Indians had an impressive 31 point win. Cowboys wide receiver Jeremiah Taylor got the first and only touchdown for Canyon and totaled 56 receiving yards with the help of quarterback Diego Olujich. However, Olujich had a rough game, throwing one interception and only 11 completed passes in the matchup.

The Saugus Centurions are coming off a victory against the Castaic Coyotes. The Centurions cemented their 2nd place spot on the Foothill League leaderboards after this victory and the Grizzlies’ loss. Saugus High School defense has made a tremendous impression this season as Dario Sandoval ranks 1st in the Foothill league for total number of sacks with nine on the season. Right behind him, linebacker Deohn Turner stands with eight sacks. The Centurions are set to take on Saugus at Canyon High School with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Hart (2-6) vs. Valencia (4-4)

Hart High School Indians and the Valencia Vikings are set to face off once again before the season comes to a close. Hart will be coming off a momentous victory against rival Canyon. Hart has proven themselves not to be underestimated as they work together to climb the rankings in the leaderboards with some impressive stats. Wide receiver Shawn Irwin sits comfortably in 1st place in receiving yards for the Foothill League while quarterback Timmy Larkins stands in 3rd for passing yards with 1,053 total yards.

Valencia have had a steady season as they stand ranked 4th in the Foothill League. The Vikings put up a resilient fight against the Wildcats in their last game, showing they have the grit to make an impact on the league. The Viking’s offense has glowed with all-star performances from wide receiver Brandon Boateng and running back Daniel Hernandez. The Vikings are coming off a restful week after their bye week where they had time to rest and come back with a bang. Hart are set to host Valencia at College of the Canyons on Friday with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Santa Clarita Christian (4-3) @ Milken (2-4)

The Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals are set to face off against the Milken Wildcats in their last league game of the season. The Cardinals have been climbing the ranks of the league, now standing in 3rd place of the Liberty (8-man) league. The Cardinals wide receiver Eli Duhm has been a dominant force on offense, averaging 80.2 receiving yards per game. When Duhm is not running the ball, quarterback Cayden Rappleye will scramble out of the pocket and get some first downs himself.

The Milken Wildcats will be heading into this game after an impressive close game against North Valley Military Institute. The Wildcats stand at 4th place in the Liberty (8 man) League, hoping to climb the ranks with a win against the Cardinals. This will also be Milken’s last league game of the season as their last game will be a non-league game instead.  With both teams looking to end the season right, there can only be one winner. Milken is set to host the Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals Thursday at Birmingham High School with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Trinity (3-4) @ Capistrano Valley Christian (6-1)

The Mesquite league season is coming to an end very soon and teams are trying to climb those rankings while they still can. Trinity Classical Academy stands in 6th place as they have had a tough season with 3 losses and no wins so far in league. However, they are set to take on Capistrano Valley Christian and are hopeful for a good outcome. Trinity’s offense has been doing pretty good as wide receiver Rocco Izzo averaged 101.7 receiving yards per game. Trinity is coming off a recent devastating loss against Linfield, so they are going to need to rally together if they hope to defeat Capistrano Valley.

Capistrano Valley Christian Eagles has had an almost perfect season having only one loss the entire season and ranking 1st in the Mesquite League. The young Eagles quarterback is only a sophomore but has made quite a name for himself, ranking 2nd in the league’s passing yards leaderboards with 1,350 yards. Wide receiver JP Synott also stands in 2nd place, this time for rushing yards leaderboards with 631 yards this season. Capistrano Valley Chritain is set for a home game against Trinity Classical Academy on Friday with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Bye week: Golden Valley (6-3)

After their blowout loss against the West Ranch Wildcats, the Golden Valley Grizzlies will rest up in a bye week before taking on the Saugus Centurions in their last game of the season. Golden Valley stands 3rd in the Foothill league, looking to climb up the ranks and take Saugus’ current 2nd place spot. The Grizzlies will be happy to take this needed rest time to hone their skills and correct their mistakes before getting back on the field. Golden Valley will take on the Saugus Centurions when they return next week on Friday, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
