Santa Clarita High School Football Preview: September 23 – 24, 2022

After an exciting week of Foothill League Football opening week play, week two seems not to disappoint as top teams clash to see who will get closer to the Foothill League title.

Saugus (4-1) vs. West Ranch (5-0)

Both dominant forces in the Foothill League, the Saugus Centurions and West Ranch Wildcats will face off in this week’s long anticipated game since last week’s Saugus vs. Valencia game.

West Ranch has remained an unstoppable force this season, maintaining their undefeated record after last week’s blowout victory against Canyon High School. West Ranch is first in the Foothill League and rightfully so, not losing a game this season and showing their talents on both offense and defense. West Ranch Quarterback Ryan Staub has proven his expertise on the field, ranking 1st in the Foothill League in passing yards. Wildcat kicker Jarrett Smith has made a name for himself on special teams, ranking 12th in the Nation’s PAT kicking made stat leaderboards.

Saugus High School is looking to win the Foothill League title for the 3rd time in a row after successfully going undefeated last season. Though Saugus has not had a perfect season this year like West Ranch, the Centurions are not one to give up, winning their first league game against rival Valencia High School in a 28-21 game. Saugus wide receiver Khai Ky-yeith  has been a key player on offense, averaging 104.3 receiving yards per game. Quarterback TJ Cataldi ranks 3rd in the Foothill League with an impressive 958 total passing yards this season. As both these unstoppable forces look to claim the championship title in the Foothill League this season, only one can prevail this week.

Saugus and West Ranch will face off Friday at College of the Canyons with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Castaic (1-4) vs. Valencia (2-3)

The Castaic Coyotes and the Valencia Vikings are both looking to redeem themselves as they go head to head in their second Foothill League game of the season.

Valencia had a close game last week against Saugus, but ultimately lost the lead in the second half against the Centurions. Valencia’s offensive game stands strong with wide receiver Brandon Boateng averaging 76.2 receiving yards per game and running back Daniel Hernandez averaging 58.3 rushing yards per game. The Vikings defense should not be underestimated, as linebacker Reid Farrell ranks 2nd in the Foothill League for total tackles.

Castaic on the other hand had a blowout loss last week in their first league game of the season against Golden Valley, 42-0. After last week, Castaic looks to tidy up their defense as they go up against a tough Vikings team who have shown their offensive strengths on the field. This is Castaic’s first complete schedule since opening in 2019, so their inexperience on the field against Valencia, who has had years of experience, could prove to be a deciding factor in who will win this matchup.

Castaic and Valencia High School are set to face off on Friday at Valencia High School with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Golden Valley (4-1) vs. Hart (1-3)

Golden Valley looks to advance in the Foothill League after their successful victory against Castaic as they look to take on Hart High School.

This will be Hart’s first Foothill League game of their season since they took a bye week last week. Hungry to start off their league games, Hart wide receiver Shawn Irwin proves himself a force to be reckoned with on offense, ranking 18th in the receiving yards in California and 1st in the Foothill League. Despite only being a junior, Hart quarterback Timmy Larkins ranks 2nd in the Foothill league for passing yards with a total, 969 yards.

On the other hand, Golden Valley is enjoying a prosperous season, only losing once and starting league play off with a dominant 42-0 victory against Castaic. Golden Valley wide receiver Ajani Smith has made quite an impression on special teams, ranking 17th in California in kickoff return yards. Golden Valley quarterback Christopher Melkonian stands tall with 577 passing yards this season, ranking 8th in the Foothill league.

Golden Valley will be looking to continue their 4-game winning streak this week as they take on Hart High School on Friday at Canyon High School with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Trinity Classical Academy (3-0) vs. Santa Paula (3-2)

Trinity Classical Academy Knights have gone undefeated this season and are set to take on the Santa Paula Cardinals in their last non-league game of the season. Trinity is part of the Mesquite Football League, and are set in first with their perfect season so far. Trinity wide receiver Rocco Izzo has been dominating the offensive game with an average 74 receiving yards per game from quarterback Dominic Smith. Smith has proven flexible and tactical in his plays, and he is not afraid to run the ball, averaging 76.3 rushing yards per game.

Santa Paula on the other hand has not had a perfect season, but they are optimistic in their ability to run on offense. Cardinal running back Allen Macias averages 59.4 rushing yards per game, making him a key component in the Cardinal’s offense. Cardinal quarterback Marcus Castaneda has ranked 2nd in the Citrus Coast passing yards leaderboards for his excellent 717 total passing yards this season.

Trinity Classical Academy will be looking to gain some momentum and keep their perfect record as they take on the Santa Paula Cardinals on Saturday 09/24 at Valencia High School with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

Canyon High School (2-3) Bye Week

Canyon High School Cowboys will be taking a bye week this week after their blowout, 45-0, loss against the West Ranch Wildcats. Canyon’s offense has mastered their running game with running back Ganisten Turner averaging 136 yards per game and ranking 4th in the Foothill League rushing yard leaderboard this season. Quarterback Diego Oluijich has made great progress this season, averaging 129 yards per game. Canyon High School will be looking to rest up before their next home game against Castaic High School on Friday 09/30 at Canyon High School.

Santa Clarita Christian High School (2-2) Bye Week

Santa Clarita Christian High School will be taking a bye week after their recent loss against Coast Union. Santa Clarita Christian is part of the Liberty (8-man) football league. Santa Clarita Christian had their first league game in the beginning of the season against Lancaster Baptist. They unfortunately lost this game and now sit 4th in the league. Santa Clarita Christian quarterback Cayden Rappleye however has had an excellent season, ranking 7th in California’s passing yards leaderboard with 576 yards from the young quarterback. With wide receiver Eli Duhm who’s ranked 10th in the state’s receiving yards leaderboards with 252 yards, Duhm and Rappleye have proven a dominant force on the offense. Santa Clarita Christian will be looking to come back from this bye week ready to take on Malibu High School at Malibu on Friday 09/30.
