Canyon High Head Coach Paul Broneer Announces Retirement After 24 Years

After serving 24 years as head coach of Canyon High School’s cross-country and track and field teams, Paul Broneer announced his retirement from the position Tuesday.

Broneer still expects to work as an assistant coach for Canyon’s track and field team with the high jumpers and hurdlers, or wherever else he feels needed.

He also is expected to continue as an assistant coach for the girl’s varsity basketball team, a position he only began in 2010.

While Broneer has been with Canyon High for 24 years, he also spent time with several other schools over the course of his 45-year coaching career, including 17 years with Glendale High School and four years with Burroughs High School.

His passion for track and field stretches back to the 1960s during his own time as a student at Burroughs High School

“When I was in high school, my track coach was just a retired football coach getting a check for being there supervising,” Broneer said. “He was the kind of guy when we were screwing around, he would tell us to run a lap, and I thought, isn’t that why we’re here? To run laps?”

With little coaching to be found from his program’s coach, Broneer turned to other sources.

The older brother of one of Broneer’s friends was Ron Morris, an Olympic pole vaulter who took the silver medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, among other achievements.

Morris helped teach Broneer using the pole vault pit the Morris family had in their backyard.

In addition to his coaching from Morris, Burbank High track and field Coach Frank Callum gave Broneer workouts that he used to help coach his own Burroughs team.

Broneer essentially became the de facto head coach of his track and field team at Burroughs while still a student.

“I even entered us in some invitationals. We went to one in Palm Springs and the only people that knew were me and my friends that were going,” Broneer said.

Broneer went on to attend undergrad at UCLA competing as a decathlete.

He had hoped to attend UCLA medical school, but was denied admission and so he shifted his focus to teaching.

In 1974, as Broneer was beginning his teaching career at Burroughs, he had his first head coaching opportunity when track and field Coach Bob Donovan asked Broneer to take over for him so that he could focus on his wide receivers.

Broneer taught AP biology for 17 years at Glendale High School until he moved to Canyon High School in 1996 and began teaching math.

He went on to retire from teaching in 2009, but stayed on as head coach of the track and field and cross country teams.

Broneer’s track and field teams were particularly dominant under his tenure, with overall records of 143-18-2 for the boys team and 126-38-0 for the girls team.

He also accumulated 43 Foothill League titles in that time — 16 with boys track and field, 10 with girls track and field, 10 with girls cross country and seven with boys cross country.

While Broneer is stepping away from his head coaching responsibilities, he certainly isn’t slowing down.

“When you retire you sometimes get more busy than if you weren’t retired,” Broneer said. “It’s amazing how much there is to do now that I have more time.”

Broneer intends to use his newfound free time to spend more time with his seven grandchildren and his wife, with whom he plans to celebrate his 50th anniversary this September.

“I’m very blessed to have this job,” he said. “A perfect job is doing what you love doing and actually get paid for it, and that’s what I hope for my grandchildren, because I was lucky to have that opportunity.”
