Girls Basketball: Valencia Finishes Season With Victory Against Canyon, Remains Perfect In League 10-0

The Valencia Vikings celebrated Senior Night against the Canyon Cowboys with a commanding 52-38 win to cap off their perfect league season.

The Valencia Vikings’ Seniors playing in their final home league game included Ysmine Ahllamara and Tatyana Morris who helped lead their team to a dominating win against the Canyon Cowboys.

Ahllamara filled the stat sheet with four points, six rebounds, five assists, and seven steals while Morris hit a big 3-pointer, and grabbed three rebounds, one assist, and one steal in the contest.

The Vikings had a five-point lead over the Cowboys, 15-10, in the first quarter, then doubled their lead to 10 points going into halftime, 29-19.

Canyon was able to fight their way back at the 1:07 mark of the third quarter trailing the Vikings, 35-30.

The Vikings then extended their lead to nine points at the end of the period, 39-30.

The final quarter is where the Vikings began to pull away at the 6:07 mark as their full-court pressure defense would prove to be too much for the Cowboys to overcome.

“You know that’s our M.O. We pressed the whole game and I think we are fast and pretty athletic and we use a lot of bodies, so we play 10 every game and try to wear people down and tire them out and by the fourth quarter hopefully we are in better shape and we play fewer minutes and we are ready to go,” said Valencia Vikings Head Coach Kevin Honaker.

The Vikings would go on to win the game, 52-38, and finished first in the Foothill League.

After the game, Coach Honaker reflected on the magnitude of winning their final league game after capping off a perfect league season.

“You know what, we actually talked about it right before we came out here tonight. We said it would be a bummer to end your season with a loss even though you’ve won league it would not feel like it. So we gotta celebrate. The girls came through, it was awesome and a great experience for all of them. I thought we played really well tonight, too, so it is a nice way to go into the playoffs.”
