June Update For Santa Clarita Players In The MLB

With Zack Britton making his season debut, there have now been seven Santa Clarita natives who have played in the MLB this season.

Trevor Bauer (Hart ‘08) has not been his usual self in his two June starts. Entering June, Bauer had not given up more than five hits in a game. He has given up six and nine hits respectively in his two starts this month. On June 6, Bauer gave up the six hits in six innings, walking four, which led to three earned runs. In his next start on June 12, he gave up six runs, four earned, and two walks in addition to the nine hits.

Bauer’s on field performance might not have been up to his standards, but he is still doing good off the field. His “K’s for a Cause” charity is teaming up with 9 Dots for the month of June and Bauer will be donating $1,000 for every strikeout he has this month. In his first two starts of the month, Bauer has 15 total K’s, good for a $15,000 donation thus far. The money will specifically be going towards computer science education for elementary schools in the Compton and LA Unified school districts.

Tyler Glasnow (Hart ‘11) has been good in each of his two starts thus far in the month of June. In his first start of the month back on June 1, he allowed just four hits and two walks in seven innings of work, but gave up three earned runs. On June 8, against the Washington Nationals, Glasnow wowed, giving up one run in seven innings while striking out 11 batters. On the season, Glasnow ranks second in all of baseball in strikeouts with 117.

Scott Barlow (Golden Valley ‘11) has appeared in four games out of the bullpen for the Kansas City Royals in the month of June and has continued to impress. In five and a third innings of work, Barlow has allowed just one run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. His season ERA is now at 1.95 which is one of the best among relief pitchers in all of the MLB.

Keston Hiura (Valencia ‘14) was 1-for-10 to start the month of June before being sent back down to Triple-A. Hiura has struggled all year in the Big Leagues and has just 14 hits in 108 at-bats. He is unlikely to be called back up to the Brewers before the MLB All-Star break. He’ll look to dial in his swing mechanics as he is currently striking out nearly 40 percent of the time.

Pat Valaika (Hart ‘10) missed the first week of June to be back at his home with family after the death of his father-in-law. Valaika made his return to the Orioles on June 8th and had his best game of the season. He finished with two doubles and three RBIs, both of which are season highs. The rest of the week, Valaika racked up three more hits in eight at-bats. After batting just .167 the first two months of the season, Valaika is hitting .417 early into the month of June. Valaika said that his father-in-law enjoyed nothing more than watching him play ball and he will try to play for him and make Santa Clarita proud.

Tommy Milone (Saugus ‘11) remains on the injured list with problems in his pitching shoulder. He won’t be eligible to return until the beginning of July.

Zack Britton (born in Santa Clarita) made his season debut for the New York Yankees after missing the first two and a half months of the season recovering from surgery on his elbow. Britton entered the game and pitched a scoreless seventh inning. He induced a ground out and a pop out, before striking out Luke Williams  to end the inning.
