Major League Baseball Season Update For Santa Clarita Players – June 01, 2021

As the month of May finishes up, we are already two months into the Major League Baseball season and Santa Clarita Players are still going strong.

Trevor Bauer (Hart ‘08) picked up his third win of May Monday night, helping the Dodgers end a three game skid. Bauer backed up his exceptional 2.48 ERA in April with an even better one in May, 1.98. On the season Bauer boasts a 2.24 ERA which places him 12th in all of baseball among qualified pitchers. Bauer’s best start of the month came on May 15 against the Miami Marlins when he pitched seven shutout innings, giving up just two hits and striking out 10. Bauer currently sits fourth in the MLB for strikeouts with 96 on the season. While this is a welcoming sight for the Dodgers, Bauer’s stellar numbers are also helping out local charities through his “K’s for a Cause” charity where he is donating $1,000 for every strikeout he has. This means that in just two months, Bauer has donated $96,000 to local charities. In May Bauer chose to donate to the Just Keep Living Foundation and he racked up 45 strikeouts, good for a $45,000 donation to the foundation.

Keston Hiura (Valencia ‘14) was recalled from Triple-A a week ago after being sent down in early May and appears to be back in the Milwaukee Brewers lineup. In his first game back, on May 24, Hiura reached base twice, once via a walk and the other via a single in the fourth inning. He is still struggling at the plate and is hitting just .137 on the season while also striking out at a very high rate.

Scott Barlow (Golden Valley ‘11) followed up an impressive April with an even better May. Barlow currently has an ERA of 2.00 for the season which is good for 12th best among relievers in the American League. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last eight appearances which have spanned eight innings. In those appearances, Barlow has a dominating 16 strikeouts, while allowing just three hits.

Tyler Glasnow (Hart ‘11) made five starts for the Tampa Bay Rays in the month of May. He wasn’t quite as dominant as he was in April, but opposing batters still hit below .200 off Glasnow. His best performance came during his last outing on May 26 against the Kansas City Royals. In eight innings of work, Glasnow gave up just three hits and did not allow a run, while striking out 11 Royals. The 11 Ks helped add to Glasnow’s impressive strikeout total of 98 which is good for second in all of baseball.

Pat Valaika (Hart ‘10) was with the Baltimore Orioles all month after being called up from Triple-A in late April. The 28 year old, Santa Clarita native, has played mostly second base this season, but has also made appearances at first base, third base, and shortstop in the month of May. He even pitched a scoreless inning back on May 8 against the Boston Red Sox. Valaika started the month off hot, racking up six hits in his first four games. Since then he’s cooled off and finished the month with a .208 batting average.

Zack Britton (born in Santa Clarita) is preparing to come off the IL after undergoing elbow surgery in March. The lefty made his first appearance Saturday, May 29 for the Somerset Patriots. He will most likely make a few more appearances in the Minor Leagues before returning to the Yankees.

Tommy Milone (Saugus ‘11) was placed on the injured list with inflation in his pitching shoulder at the beginning of May. He will be able to return at the beginning of July.
