MLB Spring Training Update On 9 Santa Clarita Players

With Major League Baseball Opening Day only a week away, let’s take a look at the nine Santa Clarita players and how they are faring in Spring Training.

Mike Montgomery (Hart ‘08), Trevor Bauer (Hart ‘08), Pat Valaika (Hart ‘10), Tyler Glasnow (Hart ‘11), Jared Oliva (Valencia ‘13), Keston Hiura (Valencia ‘14), Hunter Greene (Notre Dame HS ‘17), Scott Barlow (Golden Valley ‘11), and Tommy Milone (Saugus ‘05) are all competing for their respective teams.

  • Montgomery is currently pitching for the New York Mets and it appears that he should make the Opening Day roster after signing a Minor League contract in the offseason. Montgomery is coming off of a season that was cut short due to injury and he only appeared in three games. Montgomery is yet to give up an earned run in two appearances and has struck out five batters in Spring Training.
  • Bauer signed a three year $102 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason after winning the National League Cy Young Award in 2020. The Hart High School alumni has pitched 13.1 innings in Spring Training giving up just three runs and striking out 16 batters. Bauer will look to keep the momentum from his 2020 season and should play a key role in the Dodgers quest to repeat as World Series Champions.
  • Valaika is coming off of his best season in the Big Leagues and is now entering his second season with the Baltimore Orioles. He has played in 13 Spring Training games this year, racking up seven hits including two home runs. Valaika is projected to be a utility infielder for the Orioles this season and should fill in at multiple positions as needed.

  • Glasnow will be coming into the 2021 MLB season on a mission as he looks to get back to the World Series after losing to the Dodgers last year. The 27 year-old pitcher posted a 5-1 record last season and has pitched in three games during this year’s Spring Training in which he has recorded a 5.59 ERA and 17 strikeouts.
  • Spring training is perhaps most important for Jared Oliva as he tries to make the Pittsburgh Pirates Opening Day roster. The 25 year-old made his MLB debut last season and appeared in six total games. Oliva has played in nine Spring Training games in 2021 tallying three hits including a home run and a double. He also has added four RBIs and has scored three runs.
  • Hiura is entering his third year in the MLB and is projected to be in the Milwaukee Brewers starting lineup at either first or second base. The 24 year-old quickly made his way through the Minor Leagues to the Big Leagues and has established himself as one of the top young players in the game. He has six hits in 13 Spring Training games in 2021, including two doubles and a home run, while also driving in five runs.

  • Greene is one of the best prospects in baseball and has said that it is his goal to make his Major League debut sometime in the 2021 season. Greene, the second overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, has only made one appearance in Spring Training this season. The 21 year-old pitched one inning giving up three runs and striking out one.
  • Barlow is looking to keep momentum going after a strong 2020 season in which he pitched 30 innings and stuck out 39 batters. He is a vital member of the Kansas City Royals bullpen and could slip into the closer role this season. Barlow has been impressive in Spring Training this year pitching 5.2 innings over six games and has yet to give up an earned run. He also has nine strikeouts and has recorded two saves in two opportunities.
  • Milone is hoping to make the Toronto Blue Jays roster this upcoming season which would be his 11th season in the MLB. The 34 year-old veteran signed a minor league contract in the offseason and was invited to Spring Training. He has appeared in just two games, but in his 4.1 innings he has yet to give up an earned run and has struck out four batters.
