Santa Clarita Coaches To Be Honored At Rose Bowl Football Hall Of Fame

Two Santa Clarita high school coaches are set to be inducted into the California High School Football Hall of Fame at the Rose Bowl in November.

Among the 13 coaches chosen to be honored that night are Harry Welch who coached at Canyon High School and Mike Herrington who coached at Hart High School.

Welch is a retired football coach with a 42-year coaching career, averaging over 10 wins per season and winning nine California Intershcolation Federation (CIF) Championships and three state championships.

Welch’s career highlights include 46-game winning streak, a 30-game winning streak and nine CIF sectional titles. In Santa Clarita, Welch led Canyon High School in 2006 to a Division 1 California State Championship.

Herrington is also a retired football coach of over 30 years, during which he accumulated 304 wins, with 100 loses and one tie while winning seven CIF Southern Section Championships, four CIF Southern Section runner-ups and 15 league championships.

He also held a 65-game league winning streak that spanned 13 years

Herrington served as the athletic director at Hart High School for 20 years and football coach for over 30 years before retiring in 2019.

13 coaches and 100 players, which is symbolic of the Rose Bowl Stadium 100th year, are expected to be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Nov. 25 during the week of the CIF-Southern Section Division I Championship game.

This game is scheduled to be at the Rose Bowl on Nov. 25 for the first time since 1944.

“The CIF is privileged to participate in the selection process for the California High School Football Hall of Fame,” said CIF Executive Director Ron Nocetti. “We thank the Rose Bowl Stadium, the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation, and the National Football Foundation for honoring the long and storied history of high school football in California and look forward to the induction of its inaugural class.”

A formal California High School Football Hall of Fame website is currently in development to allow the public to nominate players and coaches for consideration. The website is expected to be ready for public viewing on Nov. 1.
