The West Valley Division 2nd round kicks off tonight across Southern California, and the Valencia Vikings will do battle with the Chino Hills Huskies at Chino Hills HS. Valencia rattled off six straight wins since losing to the No. 1 team in the country in the last game before Foothill League play opened, and have been dominant since that first week in October.

Offensively the big questions before the winning streak were the lack of consistency and inaccuracy of senior quarterback Cole Parkinson. In the six weeks since, both of those questions have been answered.

The Vikings have scored an average of 33.8 points per game during this winning streak, and have only been held scoreless in 7 of the 24 quarters (3 of which were in the second half of games that were well in hand). Additionally, Parkinson has improved his accuracy on throws downfield, forcing defenses to shy away from man coverage as much as they were in the beginning of the year.

On defense, Valencia is led by their guys up front, and the front seven is a big reason the Vikings were able to build a lead last week against San Juan Hills and never look back. Jermaine Brown and Taylor Manuel are two players we’ve talked about a lot this season, and they have been playing excellent football. Another player that has improved over the course of the season is junior outside linebacker Tariq Speights, showing off range and impressive tackling ability.

We mentioned yesterday the key to this game will be for Valencia to limit the run with their front seven, and control the clock on offense with the balance they’ve shown this year. It’s imperative Effie Davalos and Jahmar Berkley recognize blitz pickups and help the offensive line protect Cole Parkinson.

A great game is just hours away from Chino Hills, CA. Best of luck to the Vikings.
