Santa Clarita Sports Playoff Update

The playoffs are in full swing for high school basketball and soccer teams in Santa Clarita, so here’s the latest on who is still alive and who has been bounced across the SCV.

Boys Basketball

It was a clean sweep for Santa Clarita boys basketball teams in the postseason on Friday night, as Valencia High School, Hart High School, Trinity Classical Academy and Santa Clarita Christian School (SCCS) each advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective playoff brackets.

Valencia (24-5) turned it on in the second half to take control of their matchup against Crespi on Friday, as they won 76-65. Crespi’s size forced the Vikings to go big, but they should be able to match up more consistently with their division 1 quarterfinal opponent, Damien (23-7), on Tuesday night at home.

Hart (18-12) carried the momentum from their dramatic overtime road win against Covina in their playoff opener into the second round at home against Laguna Beach, where the Indians picked up a 65-56 win and advanced to the Division 3AA quarterfinals. Hart hosts Hillcrest (22-8) Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for a chance to advance to the final four.

Trinity (18-6) has cruised through the first two rounds of the division 5A playoffs, with a more than 48-point average margin of victory so far. Now Rancho Alamitos (15-12) will have to see if they can prove a test for the Knights as they come to town for the quarterfinal matchup.

SCCS (21-5) advanced to the division 2AA quarterfinal with their 74-53 win over La Habra on Friday. The Cardinals remain home for their next matchup, as Fairmont Prep (21-8) comes to town to challenge SCCS.

Girls Basketball

After a first-round bye, Saugus (24-5) opened up their postseason run with a 70-65 win over St. Anthony at home. The three-headed monster of Monique Febles, Libbie McMahan and Eden MacKenzie was too much for St. Anthony to contain, as the three combined for 59 of Saugus’ 70 points. They’ll look to carry that offensive rhythm into their next game at home against Fairmont Prep (23-6) Wednesday night.

The other Santa Clarita teams in the playoffs weren’t as fortunate as the Centurions, as Valencia (19-11) and SCCS (17-8) each failed to come up with a win on Saturday, ending their championship aspirations.

Boys Soccer

Hart (17-2-3) advanced in dramatic fashion against Montebello on the road Friday, as regular time expired with the game in a 1-1 tie and had to be decided by a shootout, which Hart won 4-3. Now the Indians get to return home to face their quarterfinal opponent, Norwalk (16-4-3) on Tuesday.

Girls Soccer

SCCS (11-5-1) was the last Santa Clarita girls soccer team standing on Saturday, but they too had their playoff run ended after a 0-3 loss to Milken High School in the second round of the postseason.
