Santa Clarita Sports Report – January 7, 2016

Santa Clarita High School Basketball

The Thriller in Lancaster. Well, that’s what we’ll call it here as the Golden Valley Grizzlies (11-4) continued their run through the AV Dodge New Year’s Classic by shocking Paraclete at the buzzer, 50-49.

Freshman Richard Kawakami (7 points, 12 rebounds) scored a tip-in with no time remaining to send the Grizzlies to the semi-final tonight at 7:30. Bryce Tyler-St. Clair led the team with 15 points.

The Hart Indians ran into a buzzsaw in Sun Valley on Wednesday. No. 11 Village Christian defeated the Indians, 72-56. D1 hopeful Josh Caston scored 21 points for the Crusaders.

West Ranch improved to 10-6 on the year with a 72-60 victory over Poly.

The lone team to the hit the court tonight is the Canyon Cowboys (10-6), who visit Dos Pueblos at 7 pm looking to get back on track after slipping up against Camarillo on Tuesday.

Santa Clarita High School Girls Basketball

Fairfax is being taken by storm by the Canyon Cowboys (11-2). In Game 2 of the Fairfax Tournament, the ladies once again sped out to a massive first quarter lead and cruised to an 81-35 victory.

Up next for the Cowboys (in the midst of a five-game winning streak) is Game 3 against Granada Hills at 4:30, who come into the matchup on a three game streak of its own.

West Ranch improved to four games above .500 (8-4) just like its counterpart boys team by knocking off Simi Valley at home, 60-51. The Wildcats will complete a home back-to-back tonight against Santa Monica. Tip-off is at 7.

The other home team in the Valley this evening is Saugus (12-4) who gets a visit from Beverly Hills. That start is at 6:30.

Golden Valley hits the road tonight looking to snap a two-game skid against El Camino Real. The Conquistadors are in the midst of their own three-game losing streak, so a big game for both teams to turn things around.

Santa Clarita High School Boys Soccer

It was a rough morning for the West Ranch (3-4-4) soccer team, blown out at Littlerock by a score of 7-0. The Cats conceded five second half goals in the loss.

Santa Clarita High School Girls Soccer

Two Foothill League teams take the pitch this evening in Santa Clarita.

Valencia takes on La Habra, and Canyon battles Lancaster. Both matches kickoff at 5 pm.

COC Basketball

There is some good news and some bad news for Cougars basketball after Wednesday night’s WSC openers.

The good news? The ladies are on a roll, having won six straight after soundly defeating Santa Monica, 77-59. Hannah Green continues to dominate the painted area for the Cougars, notching a massive triple-double with 15 points, 16 boards and 15 blocks. That’s right. Fifteen blocks.

The bad news? The men continued dropped their second in a row, falling to the Corsairs, 91-83.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Congratulations are in order to perhaps the greatest hitting catcher in the history of Major League Baseball.

Mike Piazza, the former Dodger and 1993 NL Rookie of the Year, was voted into the MLB Hall of Fame on Wednesday alongside Ken Griffey, Jr.

Piazza came up in the Dodgers minor league system and debuted in 1992. He played seven seasons for Los Angeles, blasting 177 home runs while driving in 563 RBI for an impressive .331 batting average.

The Dodger great made five straight All-Star appearances from 93-97 before being unceremoniously traded to the Florida Marlins in May of 1998. He played sixteen seasons in Major League Baseball, the first seven of which came with the LA Dodgers.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers are in Sacramento tonight to take on their Pacific Division rival. Kings and Lakers tip-off at 7:30.
