Santa Clarita Sports Report – March 21, 2018

Santa Clarita High School Baseball

Tuesday’s Foothill League Tournament scoreboard:

Hart: 3

Saugus: 5

Saugus scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally from a 3-2 deficit for the win. Tony Jacob pitched a complete game for the Centurions, fanning twelve batters in the win.

The Indians offense as a whole continues to struggle, failing to score more than three runs for the eighth time in ten games; however, senior captain Cole Roederer has homered in four consecutive games and hitting .385 on the season.

Canyon: 0

West Ranch: 12

Since a league-opening loss at Hart, the Wildcats have outscored opponents 27-2 in three wins.

Will Chambers had a monster game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two bombs and six RBIs, tying Cole Roederer for the league lead with five home runs. The UC Santa Barbara commit is hitting .438 on the year.

Cebastian Arriaga went 2-for-3 for the Cowboys and leads the team in hitting (.400).

Santa Clarita High School Softball

Tuesday’s scoreboard:

Agoura: 6

Golden Valley: 0

DIII No. 6 Golden Valley finally met their match this season, shut out by DII No. 6 Agoura at home.

The Grizzlies face Knight on Friday.

El Camino Real: 12

West Ranch: 13 (F/9)

The Wildcats capped off a furious comeback with a ninth inning walk-off win to move to 10-2 on the season.

WR scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Six Cats had multi hit games, including Lauryn Bos (3-for-5 four RBIs) who has six of her eight RBIs on the season in the last two games.

UPDATE: Saugus’s game today against Camarillo that was scheduled for 2:00 has been cancelled (rain).

Los Angeles Dodgers

Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner will not require wrist surgery, according to Ken Guernick of MLB.com. Typically, a fractured wrist should take anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks to heal, but the time table is unofficial.

With that in mind, the plan for the first couple months of the season will be to move Logan Forsythe over to third and platoon Chase Utley with Enrique Hernandez and possibly Austin Barnes in spot duty at second.

Suddenly, a big opportunity opens up for Hernandez (who hit three home runs in a single postseason game in 2017) to contribute more frequently and become a bigger part of manager Dave Roberts’ roster.
