Santa Clarita Sports Update – February 25th

Check out a recap of all the latest Santa Clarita sports news from around the valley.

Boys Basketball

Santa Clarita Christian School (SCCS) (23-5) advanced to the CIF Southern Section (CIF-SS) Division 2AA Championship game with their win against Chaminade (26-8) on Friday night. It took overtime to get it done, but SCCS showed their championship pedigree to gut out the win and advance to their third championship game in five seasons, where they will face St. Francis (26-7) Saturday afternoon.

Trinity Classical Academy (20-6) is also slated to represent Santa Clarita basketball in the CIF-SS Division 5A Championship on Friday night. It took a gritty performance in the semifinal game against Sierra Vista (16-15-1), but the Knights emerged with the win and the opportunity to bring home a championship for their school. Trinity is slated to face Banning High School (20-12) on Saturday afternoon.

Baseball

Hart (4-0) and Canyon (4-0) have started their season with a bang as they’ve each jumped out to an undefeated start behind some big offensive outings. After a 6-5 win over Cleveland (3-1) on Monday night, the Indians advanced to the Easton Tournament final against Thousand Oaks (4-0) Tuesday night. The Cowboys have two games left on the slate before the start of league play, beginning at home against North Hollywood (1-2-1) on Thursday.

Valencia (3-1) and Golden Valley (2-1) have dropped one game each to this point in the season. The Vikings have put together two consecutive wins since their loss and will look to make it three with their final game of the Easton Tournament against Oaks Christian (2-2) on Tuesday. Golden Valley hosts Cleveland (3-1) on Thursday for the fourth game of the four-game home stand the Grizzlies opened their season with.

Saugus (1-3) and West Ranch (0-4) have struggled to put together wins so far this season, albeit for different reasons. Saugus has struggled to contain opposing offenses despite solid offensive outings of their own, while West Ranch has managed to keep scores low but has failed to generate the runs they need to compete. Both teams will look to turn things around in their next games Tuesday afternoon, as the Wildcats head into their final game of the Loara Tournament and the Centurions face St. Francis (2-2) at the Easton Tournament.

Softball

Foothill League softball has begun to sort itself into two district tiers through the first two weeks of the season, as Saugus (5-0), Hart (5-1) and Canyon (4-0) have jumped out to strong starts, while West Ranch (1-4) and Golden Valley (0-5) have struggled so far.

It’s still early, however, as league play remains nearly a month out and Valencia has yet to even play a game. West Ranch and Golden Valley will look to turn things around in that time, while Saugus, Hart and Canyon try to build on their early success.

Master’s

Women’s Basketball: Master’s (26-2) suffered their second loss of the season Saturday evening to No. 4 Westmont (23-3), 44-56. The Mustangs had previously gotten the better of Westmont in their earlier matchup, but the Warriors slowed the game down and took advantage. Now Master’s has one more opportunity to notch a win against a ranked opponent when they go on the road to face No. 6 Vanguard University (21-4).

Men’s Basketball: The Mustangs (21-7) picked up an important win against No. 4 Westmont College (25-3) on Saturday after they dropped an upset loss to University of Saint Katherine (15-10) earlier that week. They’ll look to close out the season strong, starting with their final regular season home game against Life Pacific University (7-19) on Thursday Night.

Baseball: The Mustangs (13-6) have faced something of a slide after a 9-1 start to the season. Most recently they dropped three of four in their back-to-back doubleheader against Hope International University (13-5). They’ll have a tall order as they look to right the ship during another back-to-back doubleheader against No. 15 Westmont College (11-8) beginning Friday.

College of the Canyons

Baseball: The Cougars (3-9) have gotten out to a rough start this season, as they’ve struggled to contain opposing offenses. Canyons has given up an average of more than eight runs per game so far. They have a chance to end their four-game losing streak Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to face Cypress (12-2).

Softball: Canyons (9-3) has shown some serious bat talent this year, as they’ve averaged over six runs per game through the first month of the season. A recent seven-game win streak came to an end with a 6-5 loss to San Mateo on Friday. They’ll look to get back on track this Friday as they travel to Santa Barbara City College (3-7) for a doubleheader with the Vaqueros.

Valencia Flyers

The Flyers had a bad weekend – they were routed 10-0 twice on Friday and Saturday at the hands of the Las Vegas Thunderbirds and San Diego Sabers. Things have not gone Valencia’s way this year, but hopefully, they’ll be able to string together some victories in the final stretch to finish their season strong. The Flyers will be back in action on Thursday at the Ice Station against the Ontario Avalanche.
