Saugus Swimmer Takes Home Silver At World Championships

Abbey Weitzeil, an Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer from Saugus, helped propel the United States to a silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle relay at the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea on Sunday.

The U.S. team found itself in third after a 52.98-second split on the first lap from Weitzeil’s teammate Mallory Comerford.

Wetizeil then turned in a 52.66-second split, vaulting the Americans into first place.

However, the U.S. dropped back to third after Kelsi Dahlia’s 53.46-second split, as Canada moved into first and Australia into second.

Simone Manuel, an Olympic gold medalist and world record holder in the 100-meter freestyle, anchored the relay and was able to move the Americans back into second with a 51.92-second split.

The final time for the U.S. team was 3:31:02, behind only Australia at 3:30:21.

Weitzeil’s time was the second-best performance among the U.S. team and good for seventh-best split overall in the contest.

Weitzeil is next scheduled to compete on Saturday in the eleventh heat of the women’s 50-meter freestyle.

FINA, the official governing body of the international aquatics competition, holds the FINA World Championships every two years.
