Season Update On Santa Clarita Players In The MLB – May 17, 2021

Two former Hart High School Alumni have been dominating opposing batters all season. Trevor Bauer, class of ‘08, and Tyler Glasnow, class of ‘11, have been making Santa Clarita proud and are showing the world why they are both considered two of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball.

Bauer has put on a show in his first nine starts for his hometown Dodgers. He ranks 12th in all of baseball in ERA (2.20) and fourth in strikeouts (77). Bauer was good in April, but has been even better in his first three starts in May, giving up just three runs, while posting a dominant 26 strikeouts. While Bauer’s on-field performance has been spectacular, what he is doing for the local community off the field is even better. Bauer teamed up with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation to start “K’s for a Cause” and is donating $1,000 to local charities for every strikeout he has. In the month of April he racked up 51 Ks, which resulted in a $51,000 donation to Think Together. For the month of May, Bauer will be donating to the Just Keep Living Foundation and he already has raised $26,000 and we are only halfway through the month.

Glasnow has emerged as one of baseball’s premier starting pitchers this season and any questions surrounding how good Glasnow was before the season have been answered. In nine starts this season, he has thrown 57.1 innings while posting a 2.35 ERA with 85 strikeouts. His 2.35 ERA is good for 14th best in the MLB and his 85 strikeouts rank him second, only behind Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Indians. Thus far, opposing batters are hitting just .150 against Glasnow, showing just how dominant the Santa Clarita native has been this season.

Scott Barlow (Golden Valley ‘11) has been impressive all season for the Kansas City Royals. The Santa Clarita native has made 19 appearances out of the bullpen in 2021 and has given up a run in just four of those 19 outings. He currently posts a 2.57 ERA through 21 innings, while also striking out 29 batters. 2021 is shaping up to be the best season of Barlow’s career if he can continue the success he has  found in April and May.

Pat Valaika (Hart ‘10) has made 20 appearances for the Baltimore Orioles in 2021. He struggled in the month of April, garnering just two hits in 23 at bats. In May he has been better, racking up 7 hits in 29 at bats thus far. On May 5, he hit his first home run of the season, helping the Orioles beat the Seattle Mariners 6-0. In that series against the Mariners, Valaika went 5-for-8 with a walk. Valaika started all three games this weekend at second base in the Orioles series against the Yankees.

Tommy Milone (Saugus ‘11) started the season at the Toronto Blue Jays alternate training site, but was called up to pitch just a week into the season. Milone has made six appearances this season, 5 from the bullpen and one start. In total he has pitched 14 innings, giving up 10 earned runs and striking out 17 batters. Milone struggled in his last appearance, on May 1, giving up four earned runs in 2.1 innings. He was placed on the injured list the next day, citing left shoulder inflammation.

Keston Hiura (Valencia ‘14) had a rough first month of the season for the Milwaukee Brewers. In 26 games for the Brewers he batted just .152 and had only one home run. On May 3, Hiura was sent down to AAA to play for the Brewers affiliate in Nashville. He’s played four games in AAA since being sent down and his numbers have improved. Hiura has four hits in his four games, all of them doubles. He will need to continue to improve if he wants to get called back up to the Big Leagues.

Zack Britton (born in Santa Clarita) had surgery to remove a bone chip in his elbow on March 15 and is now ramping up for a return at the end of May or beginning of June. The 33 year old veteran is currently with the New York Yankees. He has been one of the best bullpen pitchers in the MLB during his career and will be a big addition to the Yankees staff as they look to continue their recent hot streak. He is scheduled to begin his rehab assignment on Wednesday.
