Three Santa Clarita Natives Make Appearances On Major League Baseball’s Opening Weekend

Santa Clarita’s baseball talent continues to shine throughout Major League Baseball.

Hunter Greene, born in Santa Clarita, made his highly anticipated Major League debut on April 10th for the Cincinnati Reds.

Greene, who is known for his flamethrower right arm that consistently hurls fastballs over 100 miles per hour showed why he was the number two overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft and one of baseball’s top prospects. In his first MLB start, Greene tossed five innings, giving up three earned runs and striking our seven batters. He got some run support from his teammates and was able to pick up a win in his first career start. He had a similar outing his second time around. This time, Greene went 5.1 innings, giving up two earned and striking out six.

Scott Barlow (Golden Valley ‘11) picked up right where left off in 2021. The 29 year old relief pitcher had a stellar first week of the season for the Kansas City Royals. His first appearance was on Opening Day against the newly named Cleveland Guardians, where he entered the game in the eighth inning with the score tied 1-1. Starting off strong, he stuck out the first batter he faced and then promptly retired the next two Cleveland batters on one pitch each. After the Royals scored two in the bottom half of the eight inning, Barlow came back onto the mound to close out the game in the ninth. Barlow made three other appearances in the team’s first few series, allowing just one earned run. If he keeps up this pace, Barlow will once again be one of the better relievers in baseball.

Keston Hiura (Valencia ‘14) is hoping to bounce back in 2022 after a rocky 2021 campaign. The 25 year old started the season with the Milwaukee Brewers and has made appearances in six contests thus far. Hiura has racked up three hits in 13 at-bats while also adding three walks for a .375 on base percentage which would be an improvement from last season if he can continue. His playing time should be helped out this season by the implementation of a universal designated hitter this year. Previously, this position was reserved only for American League teams.

Tyler Glasnow (Hart ‘11) had his 2021 season cut short due to an arm injury that ultimately led to the young star needing Tommy John surgery. In addition to this, Glasnow underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his right ankle. Glasnow hopes to start throwing soon, which will signify a major step in his rehab process. Ultimately the goal for Glasnow and the Tampa Bay Rays is for Glasnow to pitch this season, although much is still up in the air in regards to that.

Zack Britton, who was born in Santa Clarita, started the 2021 season injured and that is right where he finds himself for 2022. The veteran relief pitcher, for the New York Yankees, underwent Tommy John surgery back in September 2021. He is now two months into his throwing rehabilitation program and is looking to get back on the mound this season after his last two seasons were cut short, by COVID and by injury.

Pat Valaika (Hart ‘10) who played with the Baltimore Orioles last season, signed a minor-league contract with the Atlanta Braves this offseason. He is currently playing for their triple-A affiliate, the Gwinnett Stripers. He’s had a hot start to the season, batting .302 through nine games with two home runs and nine RBIs. Look for Valaika to get called up to the Majors if the Braves have an injury, as he is known for being able to play almost any position on the field.

Jared Oliva (Valencia ‘13) is starting the 2022 season in triple-A with the Pirates affiliate, the Indianaoplis Indians. In five games he has tallied up five hits, including three doubles. Oliva made it up to the Big Leagues for a few games last year and is hoping to do so again in 2022.

Mike Montgomery (Hart ‘08) is currently with the Syracuse Mets, the New York Mets triple-A team. He has started three games this season, posting a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings of work. The veteran pitcher could be called up for the Mets if there are injuries in their starting rotation.

Tommy Milone (Saugus ‘05) is on the Seattle Mariners triple-A roster, but is yet to make an appearance this season.

Trever Bauer (Hart ‘08) was placed on administrative leave on July 2, 2021 and has not pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers since. This came after a sexual assult allocation surfaced. There is much speculation over whether or not Bauer will be able to return this season and if the Dodgers want him to return this season.Major League baseball had extended Bauer’s paid administrative leave through last Saturday, April 16, 2022. We will all just have to wait and see how the situation plays out as it continues to linger on.
