Valencia Graduate Jared Oliva Makes MLB Debut

The Pittsburgh Pirates called up Valencia graduate Jared Oliva from Double-A to make his major league debut against the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

Oliva got the opportunity after Pirates outfielder Jason Martin was placed on the 10-day injured list with an upper back strain.

While Oliva didn’t get the start, his manager did give him an opportunity to take his first at-bat in the majors as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth with two outs down 4-0 but struckout.

Despite the strikeout, Oliva was still elated to reach baseball’s highest levels and took to Instagram to share his thoughts.

“Dream come true! I’m grateful to have been around so many people that have helped me along this journey,” wrote Oliva. “This was a special day and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. Proud to be a Pittsburgh Pirate.”

Oliva, a Santa Clarita native, grew up in Saugus and played his high school baseball at Valencia High School.

He went on to walk on the baseball team at the University of Arizona where he played from 2015 to 2017.

Oliva’s commitment and hard work paid off when he was drafted by the Pirates in the seventh round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

He worked his way through the minors to become one of the organization’s top-ten prospects this season according to MLB.com.

Last season he made his Double-A debut and hit a respectable .277 average with 6 homers and 42 RBIs, per Baseball-Reference.com.

With the Pirates dwelling in the bottom of the standings with a league-worst record of 15-39 and six games remaining on the schedule, Oliva is likely to get a few more opportunities to show Pittsburgh what they can expect to see from him in the majors.
