Valencia JV Football Players Shave Heads In Solidarity With Teammate Diagnosed With Leukemia

Members of the Valencia High School junior varsity football team recently visited Aldo Barber Shop to have their heads shaved in support of their teammate, Pedro Roman, who has been diagnosed with leukemia.

The team took turns hopping into the barber’s chair for their opportunity to show their support for their ill teammate and friend.

Aldo Sanchez, the owner and operator of Aldo Barber Shop, as well as a class of 2005 Valencia alumnus, agreed to host the boys after hours for free buzzcuts at his shop on the corner of Rye Canyon Road and Newhall Ranch Road in Valencia.

“It was really cool. I didn’t expect it to be that many guys in one place. They were just so excited about doing it,” said Sanchez. “The energy that they had for their friend was incredible.”

As Sanchez worked to get through the queue, one of the players suggested his mom jump in and help, citing her years of experience buzzing her husband’s hair, according to Sanchez.

In total, 18 heads were shaved that evening, 13 by Sanchez and five by the volunteer mom.

Pedro shared a Facetime call with his teammates from his hospital bed to talk with his friends and watch the haircuts for himself.

“My sister went through chemo and all that stuff, so anything like this to deal with chemo and cancer, it just means a lot to me, because I went through something like this,” Sanchez said. “Just giving back however I can just means so much because cancer, or any disease, is hard.”

Even Pedro’s father was so moved by the boys’ solidarity that he too climbed into the barber’s seat to join in.

“It was just really nice to get to do this for them,” Sanchez said. “The boys loved it and it was a good time for everyone, even moms and dads and coaches. “

A GoFundMe has also been set up in support of Pedro and the Roman family as they face the road through treatment. To donate, visit the GoFundMe page here.
