What to Watch For: The biggest games in Santa Clarita sports previewed here.
Saugus (15-7, 3-2) vs. Valencia (19-4, 5-0)
Boys Basketball
Friday, 6:30 p.m., Saugus High School
Perennial Foothill League champions Valencia face one of their final, biggest hurdles on their way to another league title, a road matchup with the Saugus Centurions. The Vikings have averaged over 80 points a game in league play behind the superb offensive play of Jake Hlywiak and Noah Veluzat. Saugus was able to hold Valencia to just 62 points in their game earlier this season with strong interior defense and pestering perimeter defense. The Centurions will need to pair that level of defensive effort with a strong offensive outing of their own from senior guard Adrian McIntyre and blossoming sophomore Nate Perez to have a chance to take down this goliath of the Foothill League.
Saugus (18-4, 5-0) vs. Valencia (14-8, 4-1)
Girls Basketball
Friday, 5 p.m., Saugus High School
Saugus is on their way to a historic season for the program, while a Valencia program that has won four of the last Foothill League titles looks to spoil that and reclaim their spot as the class of the Santa Clarita Valley. The Centurions were able to handle business in their earlier meeting with the Vikings with a 56-43 win. The challenge only becomes more difficult for Valencia, who have to travel to enemy territory, but they enter the matchup on a three-game win streak during which they’ve been dominant.
West Ranch (8-7-2, 2-2-1) vs. Canyon (1-6-3, 1-2-2)
Girls Soccer
Friday, 3:15 p.m., West Ranch High School
West Ranch is fresh off a huge 8-1 win over Golden Valley on Tuesday and looking to build on that momentum in their home matchup with Canyon. The Cowboys have struggled this season but haven’t rolled over in Foothill League matches. Canyon has brought a tough defensive mentality to the game that has allowed them to play to two draws and keep their losses within two scores in league play. While Hart has emerged as a clear frontrunner for the Foothill League title, a legitimate battle has emerged in the race for a second-place finish as teams scrap to try and make the playoffs.
Master’s (19-0, 7-0) vs. Vanguard University (13-2, 6-1)
Women’s College Basketball
Thursday, 5:30 p.m., Master’s University
The Mustangs have looked untouchable all season, but face one of the few teams expected to give them a challenge in NAIA: No. 5-ranked Vanguard University. Vanguard has been rolling since their close loss to Westmont more than a month ago and have racked up eight wins in a row. Master’s has a chance to solidify their position atop the Golden State Athletic Conference standings with a win over the Lions.
