As the one-year remembrance of the Saugus High School shooting approaches, the William S. Hart Union School District is providing students and staff with resources and support for coping with emotional pain brought on by the tragedy.

During the week of Nov. 9 – 13, the Hart District has dedicated itself to recognizing the importance of mental heal and wellness for students and staff.

“We recognize that mental wellness is vital and supports us throughout our path to healing,” read a Wellness Week announcement. “This week is dedicated to recognizing the importance of cultivating positive relationships, expressing gratitude, unifying as a community and supporting one another throughout the journey to wellness.”

Students will be able to take part in several online events, each promoting mindfulness and emotional wellness, including activities such as cookie decoration, starting a gratitude journal, guided meditation and even recipes for healthy snacks, according to the Hart District website.

“On this year’s remembrance, we will focus on the many acts of gratitude, resilience, unification and strength that we have observed first-hand,” reads the statement. “We share our deepest gratitude to all of you who played an intricate role in supporting the emotional healing and mental health of lives affected.  We truly thank you for uniting with us and supporting us along the road to healing.”

The schedule of wellness activities are posted on the Hart District website, each school’s website as well as the Hart District YouTube channel.  Students and staff are encouraged to reach out to school counselors, therapists and social workers. Additionally, the Hart District Wellness website is full of resources on mental health and wellness, stress, anxiety, grief, suicide prevention, trauma recovery and self-care.

The ultimate goal of the Hart District is to provide students, staff and community members with a path forward, and to reflect on the way the people of the Santa Clarita Valley have come together in the aftermath of tragedy.

“What we want to do is to continue to focus on how much this community supports each other, loves each other, and is coming together,” said Dave Caldwell, spokesperson for the District. “It’s good to see that although we have high school rivalries, all the high schools are coming together and supporting each other, the junior high schools are coming together and supporting each other. It’s that unity that makes this community so great, and with this remembrance, we wanted to emphasize this unity of community that we live in.”

The Unity of Community Wellness Week is expected to culminate in a virtual remembrance produced by Saugus High’s Saugus News Network, which is expected to air at 6 p.m. on Nov. 14, featuring speakers, music, and other remembrance content, according to the William S. Hart Union High School District.
