The Canyon Santa Clarita Raises Over $7,000 For Saugus High Shooting Victim Fund

The Canyon Santa Clarita raised over $7,000 during a charity concert earlier this month for the victims affected by the Saugus High shooting in November.

The concert featured performances and collaborations from Steve Lukather of Toto, Colin Hay of Men at Work, Richard Marx of “Right Here Waiting” fame, Gregg Bissonette of the David Lee Roth band, Warren Ham of The Ham Brothers Band and Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band, vocalist Amy Keys, keyboardist Jeff Babko and guitarist Mick Mahan.

Ticket sales and a silent auction were able to raise over $7,100 to the victims of the Saugus High shooting.

The concert was organized by longtime Santa Clarita resident and music film director Brent Carpenter, whose children graduated from Saugus High School.

Carpenter contacted several friends from the music industry that he made in his past work as a film director, with work that includes concert videos for Ringo Starr over the past 20 years.

“One of the blessings I’ve had is getting to know some of the greatest musicians alive. They love playing, even if there is only one person in the audience,” Carpenter said. “It’s kind of like (a) big musical family. They all have worked together at some point, and they love working together.”

All proceeds are set to benefit the Saugus High fund, which was arranged after the Saugus High shooting in November.

Two victims, 15-year-old Gracie Muehlberger and 14-year-old Dominic Blackwell, were killed as a result of the Thursday, Nov. 14 shooting, when 16-year-old Nathaniel Berhow opened fire in the quad of Saugus High before turning the gun on himself.

Three other students who were injured survived the shooting and are now on the long road to recovery.
“We’re just trying to ease a bit of the pain. I mean, you think about all of this happening so close to the holidays… Those kids who were killed, their families had probably already bought presents,” said Carpenter. “People aren’t supposed to lose children, especially not that way. So we want to do whatever we can do to help.”

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
