6.4 Ridgecrest Earthquake Reported In Mojave Desert On 4th Of July

A 6.4 earthquake has been reported Thursday in the Mojave Desert near Ridgecrest, officials said.

The Ridgecrest earthquake was reported at about 10:33 a.m. about 12 kilometers southwest of Searles Valley, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

A foreshock of about a 4.2 magnitude occurred about 30 minuted before the major earthquake, according to Dr. Lucy Jones, a seismologist.

The quake was felt throughout Santa Clarita and the rest of Southern California, according to USGS officials.

The large earthquake was followed by several aftershocks ranging from magnitude 4.7 to 2.6, according to the USGS.

The Kern County Fire Department is responding to nearly “two dozen incidents,” ranging from medical assistance to structure fires in and around the City of Ridgecrest, according to a Tweet from the department.

Urban Search and Rescue teams are en route to the area to further assess the damage, according to KCFD officials.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department has reported no injuries or damage anywhere in L.A. County, including Santa Clarita, according to a spokesperson for the department.
