More Possible Power Outages In Santa Clarita Announced As Valley Braces For High Winds, Fire Risk

More possible power outages in Santa Clarita have been announced Wednesday as the valley braces for Santa Ana winds and heightened fire risk, officials said.

The Santa Clarita power outages could be in effect as early as Wednesday night up until Friday, as the Santa Anas are expected to pick-up throughout the Southland, according to Southern California Edison officials.

The power outages could be in place across the Santa Clarita Valley, including Canyon Country and  Castaic, as well as extending into Acton and Agua Dulce

When there are potentially dangerous weather conditions in fire-prone areas, SoCal Edison may need to call a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event, according to the company’s website.

“During these events, we will proactively turn off power in high fire risk areas to reduce the threat of wildfires. Turning off our customers’ power is not something we take lightly, but PSPS events are one of the ways we can better ensure the safety of the public, our customers and our employees,” said SoCal Edison officials.

Starting Wednesday evening through Friday, northeast winds are expected to be around 25 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph throughout Santa Clarita, said Kristen Stewart, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, in a previous story Wednesday.

“Humidity levels are going to be between 2 and 9 percent,” Stewart said.

Due to the low humidity levels and high gusting Santa Ana winds, officials with the National Weather Service have issued a red flag warning for the Santa Clarita Valley, according to officials.

“Conditions will be similar, if not a little more severe, than during the Saddleridge Fire,” Stewart said.

As of Wednesday morning, the red flag warning is expected to end Friday; however, it could be extended if winds and low humidity levels continue into the weekend.

  1. Their shutoff procedure on Oct 10 was severely flawed. They shut off power in Canyon Country (some over 24 hours) in tracts that have underground power while nearby areas with overhead powerlines were not shut down. The area was deemed dangerous but the very high tension powerlines that likely go do downtown LA or the valley were not powered down.

The same day the saddleridge fire was allegedly started by high tension powerlines in Sylmar, probably the same ones.
