A Canyon Country power outage was reported Thursday morning, causing College of the Canyons to cancel classes at the Canyon Country campus, officials said.
The outage was first reported at about 10:15 a.m. Thursday near Sierra Highway, reaching as far as Soledad Canyon Road, according to Southern California Edison officials.
Sand Canyon residents have also reported being impacted by a blackout, which was expected due to a planned Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS).
“During these events, we will proactively turn off power in high fire risk areas to reduce the threat of wildfires. Turning off our customers’ power is not something we take lightly, but PSPS events are one of the ways we can better ensure the safety of the public, our customers and our employees,” said SoCal Edison officials.

The Canyon Country Campus is set to be closed the rest of Thursday, with all classes on the eastside campus canceled. Classes for the main Valencia campus are expected to be unaffected, according to COC officials.
The Santa Clarita power outage also impacted street lights, with a major intersection at Soledad Canyon and Sierra Highway blinking red and causing a traffic backup in the area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
As of 11 a.m. Thursday, there are about 1,800 homes impacted by the outage, with the restoration of power estimated to be about 12 p.m., according to the SoCal Edison Outage Center.
