Community Rallies Behind Family That Lost Home, Two Dogs In Newhall Structure Fire

The Santa Clarita community is rallying behind a family that lost their home and two dogs in a Newhall structure fire by providing meals and gift cards, officials said.

Around 11:20 p.m. on July 9, firefighters received reports of a structure fire on the 24000 block of Wayman Street in Newhall, with smoke and fire showing on arrival, according to officials.

The family was able to escape from the burning house, but two of their three dogs did not make it out, according to a family friend.

It was originally believed that the family’s Chihuahua mix, Lola, died in the blaze, and another dog, Lucy, was missing, but the family later found Lucy to be deceased, according to a Facebook post.

A Meal Train account has been set up by Allyson Graham, a longtime friend of the family, to help provide food for them until they can leave the hotel where they’re currently staying. The family is not picky about what type of food they receive, according to Graham.

“The family may like to have home-cooked meals because they are living in a hotel,” Graham said.

After a submission is entered into Meal Train, Graham says she will receive an email and contact the submitting individual to arrange how to get the meals to the family.

“The account is set up until the end of August, and by then they should be able to find a place to rent,” Graham said.

  1. This is my youngest step-daughter (emphasis on daughter), son-in-law and grandchildren. They are the best people I know. Please help them if you can.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
