Controlled Burns Being Conducted In Castaic For Brush Fire Prevention

With temperatures starting to warm up, raising the risk of brush fires, the Los Angeles County Fire Department has started conducting controlled burns in the Castaic area Wednesday morning, officials said.

On Wednesday morning from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., firefighters are conducting a controlled burn near Pitchess Detention Center located at 29340 The Old Road, said Marvin Lim, a spokesperson for the department.

Firefighters conduct these drills as a training opportunity, but also to reduce the amount of dry brush in the area, according to officials.

“We are starting to anticipate fire season,” Lim said. “There is a lot of dry brush in the Castaic area and they are trying to get it maintainable, for when a brush fire may start in the area.”

The LACoFD is expected to be conducting multiple controlled burns within the days to come throughout the Santa Clarita Valley, however, the schedule has not been released as of Wednesday morning.

Although smoke and flames may be visible in Castaic, there is no threat to the public, according to officials.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
