The Creek Fire forced over 100,000 people from their homes last week, including children from Sylmar Elementary School. But a Santa Clarita resident is organizing a clothing drive for the students affected.
“It started off as calling the school to see if they needed any help,” said Alice Medina, the donation drive organizer. “The donation drive has now spread throughout the community, it is amazing how we all come together to help those in need.”
Sylmar Elementary officials are seeking clothes, shoes, food and other supplies to assist the low-income school, where 88 percent of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
“Thankfully, most of our students did not lose their homes,” said Erica Flores, the office manager for the elementary school. “We still need assistance for basic items like clothes and food.”
Residents wishing to help can drop off brand new clothing to Firehouse Subs on Valencia Boulevard, said the organizer.
“Jennifer, the owner of Firehouse, has been really great in helping with the drive,” added Medina. “The bins are now almost full.”
Sylmar Elementary closes for the school year on Friday, Dec. 15, but the donation drive will continue after the semester ends. Visit the Facebook page for more information.
Residents of Kagel Canyon have also organized a concert to assist victims of the Creek Fire in Sylmar, featuring local bands.
The “Four Alarm Fundraiser” on Saturday, Dec. 16 is set to feature Shari Puorto and Lightnin’ Willie and Mother Blues, among others. It will be hosted by Jim Gustin and Truth Jones.
Concert attendees are encouraged to donate at least $10 for admission. All of the proceeds will go to benefit the Creek Fire Victims, according to organizers.
The benefit concert is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at the Hideaway Bar & Grill at 12122 Kagel Canyon Road in Sylmar.
