Equestrian Fire 100 Percent Contained, Firefighters Patrolling As Winds Increase

The Equestrian Fire in Castaic is now 100 percent contained Tuesday, one day after breaking out near Pitchess Detention Center, with firefighters patrolling the area as winds increase, officials said.

The Castaic fire, dubbed the Equestrian Fire, was first reported at about 3:40 a.m. Monday near the southbound I-5 Freeway just north of Hasley Canyon Road on Pitchess Detention Center property, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“It is now 100 percent contained,” said Chris Thomas, spokesperson for the department on Tuesday, “There is one patrol still in the area.”

Fueled by strong winds, the Equestrian Fire quickly grew to about 20 acres within an hour, according to Fire officials.

The Castaic brush fire has the potential to threaten structures, however, no buildings were burned as a result of the incident.

Firefighters were able to hold their containment lines, as the sun rose over the smoke and flames, with the Equestrian Fire slightly growing to approximately 75 acres, according to fire officials.

By mid-morning, crews doubled the about of containment to 60 percent, with the wind-fueled fire growing to the final size of about 86 acres.

The next day, firefighters are reporting 100 percent containment, with daily temperatures expected to be in the mid-90s.
