Equestrian Fire In Castaic Breaks Out Near Pitchess Detention Center

The Equestrian Fire in Castaic broke out near Pitchess Detention Center early Monday morning, with the “potential to threaten” several nearby structures.

UPDATE (12:00 p.m.): The Equestrian Fire in Castaic has reached about 70 percent containment, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Some units have been released, with another assessment with the units needed set for 2 p.m. Monday.

UPDATE (9:55 a.m.): The fire in Castaic, dubbed the Equestrian Fire, has grown to 86 acres, with firefighters doubling the containment now at 60 percent, according to Austin Bennett, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The incident commander is holding all units assigned to the fire until 12 p.m. Monday. After that time, firefighters are going to assess the units needed, according to Fire officials.

UPDATE (7:30 a.m.): The Equestrian Fire has grown to 75 acres in size, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Containment remains at 30 percent as of 7:30 a.m. Monday.

UPDATE (6:55 a.m.): The blaze has grown to 60 acres in size, with firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department reporting that 30 percent of the blaze was contained.

Original Post: At around 3:40 a.m. Monday, officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department received reports of a brush fire near the southbound I-5 Freeway just north of Hasley Canyon Road on Pitchess Detention Center property.

“It has the potential to threaten nearby structures at the Wayside Facility,” said Supervisor Ornelas with the department

The blaze, later dubbed the “Equestrian Fire,” had grown to 20 acres in size as with a “moderate rate of spread” as of 4:30 a.m. Monday.

A second-alarm brush response was called as the Equestrian Fire was found to potentially threaten several structures at the Wayside Jail facility to the north of its initial location, according to Ornelas.

Both a Wind Advisory and Red Flag Warning had been issued in the area prior to the fire breaking out, with temperatures in the 60-degree range, humidity at 39 percent, and north-northeast winds blowing at around 16 mph as of Monday morning, according to officials with the National Weather Service.

No injuries or damage had been reported as of 4:40 a.m. Monday.

    • Hey Terry – don’t start making things up. There is no truth to that whatsoever. If you have some proof, please post it – not “I heard” or “someone somewhere saw” BS scare tactics. I get it, it’s great to instill fear in others and but it’s also 2020 and just about everything is verifiable. There are no “ANARCHIST PROTESTERS, hur hur” just demented people who like making things up to feel important.
