Tick Fire Breaks Out In Canyon Country, Threatening Homes

The Tick Fire in Canyon Country ignited Thursday afternoon, threatening homes and prompting a response from firefighters, officials said.

Tick Fire Evacuation Updates: Two Santa Clarita Brush Fires Break Out Promoting School, Road Closures

UPDATE: (6:35 p.m) — All lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway are now open in Castaic, according to City of Santa Clarita officials.

UPDATE: (6:12 p.m.) — The Tick Fire has reached about 5,000 acres. Forward progress has been slowed. Structure protection is still in place, according to Los Angeles County Fire officials.

UPDATE: (4:45 p.m.) — Tick Fire evacuations are also in place for all residents north of 14 Freeway, east of Whites Canyon Road Plum Canyon, south of Vasquez Canyon, west of Agua Dulce Canyon Road.

Additional Tick Fire evacuations are in place, south of 14 Freeway, east of Sand Canyon, north of Placerita Canyon, and west of Sand Canyon Country Club, according to Fire officials.

Castaic Animal Shelter — Large And Small Animal Evacuation Center: 31044 Charlie Canyon Road. 

UPDATE: (4:40 p.m.) — The Tick Fire has reached over 3700 acres, according to Los Angeles County Fire officials.

UPDATE: (4:20 p.m.) — Homes are currently on fire east of the 5 Freeway, according to Fire officials.

UPDATE: (4:10 p.m.) — Additional Tick Fire evacuations have been announced: 

  • South of Vasquez Canyon Road 
  • North and east of Plum Canyon Road
  • North and east of Whites Canyon Road 
  • North and east of Soledad Canyon Road, where the road meets Whites Canyon Road
  • West of Sequoia Road 
  • Davenport Road, east of Sierra Highway

UPDATE: (3:20 p.m.) — Tick Fire evacuations are in place along the 14 Freeway from Soledad Canyon Road to Shadow Pines Boulevard in Canyon Country.

For residents impacted by the Tick Fire, Red Cross has set up Golden Valley High School as an evacuation center.

UPDATE: (3:05 p.m.) — The Tick Fire has impacted multiple homes on Sand Canyon Road and Sierra Highway, according to Los Angeles County Fire officials.

UPDATE: (2:55 p.m.) — The Tick Fire has now reportedly reached over 850 acres in size, according to Fire officials.

UPDATE: (2:20 p.m.) — Firefighters have called a third alarm brush response for the Tick Fire, according to Fire officials.

The brush fire, dubbed the Tick Fire, was first reported around 1:44 p.m. on the 31000 block of Tick Canyon Road in Canyon Country, said Sean Rios, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“The fire is running uphill with heavy fire in heavy fuels,” Rios said.

Within 20 minutes of being reported, the fire reached an estimated 200 acres, according to Rios.

Due to structures being threatened, crews at the scene have requested a second alarm response to assist in structure protection, according to Fire officials.
