“This is about a seven to ten year old infestation,”said Ellis. “So, we’re going to kill them with orange oil and BoraCare.”

The specific kind of termite found at this site, the “southwestern dry-wood termite” is “huge around Southern California,” Ellis explained.

Southwestern dry-wood termites “have a tendency to eat the wood from the inside out,” and “oftentimes they go for the soft wood in-between the grain first,” said Ellis. These termites leave smooth holes in wood joists, leaving them with the appearance Swiss cheese and undermining the structural integrity of the wood.

“So, what we have to do is find a way to inject (orange oil) into … the tunnels they make, (which) are called galleries,” Ellis said. “That orange oil is going to soak all the way through that piece of wood, killing any termites that are left inside, and then from the outside, we’re going to spray BoraCare.”

The video shows how orange oil penetrates through the long galleries inside of the wood, traveling several feet throughout the hollow trails left by termite colonies.

“Once you’ve injected enough orange oil into that gallery, it’s actually going to soak through the entire piece of wood through the capillary effect over the next four to six hours, just completely melting the exoskeleton of the termites inside in the process,” Ellis explained.

This orange oil injection process was repeated every eight to ten inches along each exposed wood beam in the affected area to help ensure all termites are exposed to the oil. Additionally, BoraCare was sprayed over each beam to catch any termites that might have escaped the orange oil treatment.

Once the known infestation was fully processed using orange oil and BoraCare, Unipest technicians sprayed the client’s attic as a preventative measure to keep a secondary termite infestation from forming.

As far as the termites are concerned, “by the time we finish spraying these pieces of wood, you might as well have made them out of metal,” Ellis said.
