Cardon Ellis of Unipest advised against using store-bought fly bags around the exterior of homes, as he noted they tend to attract more flies than they catch.

“I actually think your problem gets worse if you put out those store-bought bags,” Ellis said, noting that the bags contain a hormone designed to imitate a female fly and attract male flies as a result, or vice versa.

“It smells horrible,” Ellis continued. “Plus it confuses the flies, because they don’t know exactly where the smell is coming from. They just know the general area, so I swear, for every one that you trap, you’ve attracted about 20.”

As for professionally-installed mosquito buckets, Ellis noted that this new method of mosquito control has proven effective in his experience.

Mosquito buckets containing a natural, predatory fungus in stagnant water are buried in a yard, attracting mosquitoes who then pick up the fungus and take it with them.

“It’s so light, it doesn’t kill them for the next two or three days, and they’ll actually transfer it as they feed and they groom,” Ellis said. “They’ll get other mosquitoes infected, and then, boom, you actually eliminate the mosquito problem around your house.”

Ellis noted that these mosquito buckets are eco-friendly, pet-friendly and kid-friendly.

“The science behind mosquito control is amazing now,” he said. “Right now we’re putting out a lot of mosquito buckets.”
