‘Pest Talk’ With Unipest: Catching Attic Raccoons By Hand (VIDEO)

During the latest “Pest Talk” radio show, Cardon Ellis of Unipest brought on a wildlife removal expert to talk about what it’s like to catch raccoons in residents’ attics by hand.

Ellis opened the show by asking Frank Ortiz of Advanced Wildlife Removal about the scariest animal he has ever removed at work.

“Most of the time it’s raccoons, because they’re the most intense animal out of all of them,” Ortiz said. “They’re intense, they’re fast, they’re strong and they’re just really hard to deal with.”

While Ellis noted that the diseases pests can transmit scare him the most, he agreed that raccoons — especially females — top the list for him too.

When asked how he would handle a call about a raccoon in a person’s attic, Ortiz noted that he would try “pulling them out” with his bare hands whenever possible, or using a snare pole if necessary.

“It’s actually intimidating because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said. “Most of the time actually they’re kind of scared of you, … but they fight back no matter what, so it’s just very difficult.”

A few concerns that came to Ortiz’s mind when trying to remove a raccoon is the possibility of either himself or the raccoon falling through the ceiling during the process, and the potential for the raccoon to leap over him to try and get away.

“It gets taxing if they want to run and jump over you and run down your back and take off the other direction,” he said. “They can do that and you can’t really maneuver.”

Ellis asked Ortiz if there was a chance the raccoon might get into the resident’s house if they’re able to get past him, but Ortiz noted that he fully enters the attic and closes the door behind him.

“If masculinity is toxic, you are straight radioactive,” Ellis said with a laugh. “You’re like, ‘Honey, I’m going to lock myself in the freaking attic with this wild animal whose closest living relative is the North American black bear, … and I’m not going to let him leave until he’s in my bare hands.’”
