During a recent “The Commercial Real Estate Hour” on KHTS, Host Jesus Henao of Leola Commercial, Inc. opened up a discussion about the “self-made” man and woman, emphasizing his belief that a person does not need to come from wealth to be successful.

“I want to dispel that misconception that people think, ‘Oh, you’ve got to be wealthy to make it,’” Henao said. “No, you don’t.”
Henao noted that he himself came from “nothing” as the son of a “dirt poor” baker with a third-grade education and a welder with a high school education.

His guest on the show, Realtor Daron Campbell, said he was raised by a single mom who worked as a clerk at a dry cleaners, and he had to get a minimum wage job at a swimming pool when he was young.
“I’ve had to work for everything since day one,” Campbell said. “Nobody handed me anything.”
When Henao asked Campbell what traits he believes are required in order to achieve self-made success and wealth, he responded, “A little bit of anger combined with a lot of competitiveness, and then a zest for knowledge.”
“You hit the nail on the head,” Henao said. “You have to have a little edge — you’ve got to be competitive.”
Serving in the Marines was where Henao noted he found his “edge,” “anger” and “go-at-it attitude,” while Campbell compared his experience to playing sports.
“So many people that you find that are self-made were athletes at some point during their life, because there’s this competitiveness that lives inside of them,” he said. “They don’t like to lose, and they like to accomplish things, and they’re willing to work for it — now there’s the key.”
Campbell continued that despite the world being filled with people who want a “magic button” to make things happen for them, work ethic is critical.
“The fact is, no success happens like that,” he said. “You bring work ethic to any equation, you can make it a successful equation.”
Henao added that he likes to hire military veterans to work for him because of the work ethic required to serve.
“I know they got what it takes. If they’re coachable, we’re going to make money together,” Henao said. “And that’s what it’s about — helping other people to get in the game and making it happen.”
