Cardon Ellis of Unipest noted that the first step is to properly identify the wasps through a visual inspection of the wasps themselves, as well as their nest.
“They have long slender legs that tend to hang while they’re in flight and they have distinctive yellow markings,” Ellis said. “But more than anything, they’re recognized by their paper mache almost beehive-looking concave nests that they make — hence the name paper wasps.”
Once the wasps have been identified, Ellis next recommended “suiting up” in protective gear, adding that while paper wasps generally aren’t aggressive, if provoked, their sting can be extremely painful and cause severe allergic reactions.

“I know you look kind of goofy, but let me tell you, one sting from a paper wasp nest or a paper wasp will make you think all of this goofy was worth it,” Ellis said.
After selecting a wasp spray and making sure no people or animals are nearby, Ellis then advised “proceeding with caution” toward the nest, getting as close as possible before spraying.
“Some aerosols boast being able to spray up to 25, 30 feet from the can, but the truth is, if you’re trying to do this from 25 or 30 feet away, you’re going to be wasting a ton of product unnecessarily,” Ellis said. “Trust your bee suit and try and do this from as close to point blank as you possibly can.”
Once the nest has been sprayed, Ellis recommended leaving it in place overnight or even for 24 hours, giving other paper wasps that are out feeding time to return.
“The residual from some of these pesticides is often enough to exterminate the wasps that weren’t even present for the initial spray, so it’s beneficial to let it hang around for a little while,” Ellis said.
He concluded, “Now if you have any more questions concerning paper wasps, their safe extermination or any other DIY tips about pest control, (call Unipest at 661-284-7575).”

The darned things keep trying to build a nest in my metal mailbox! I was stung twice before I got rid of them, at least for now.
Fuel injector spray killed the nest in my shed.
