“In order to treat for rats and mice, you have to know exactly which one you’re dealing with, because not only are their biologies totally different, but so are their treatment methods,” said Cardon Ellis of Unipest.

Ellis first noted that mice are inquisitive creatures with a small circumference of infestation, which has a direct impact on the type of traps used to eliminate an infestation.

“Mice love checking things out, exploring things, and they’re a lot smaller, so when you treat for mice, you’re generally going to use much smaller traps and scented glue boards, because you want to attract them to the glue board through the smell,” Ellis explained.

In contrast, rats are what’s called neophobic, meaning that they are not inquisitive at all and will typically try to avoid anything out of the ordinary, according to Ellis.

“They hate new things in their path — they aren’t inquisitive, they don’t want to check them out,” Ellis said. “So when you’re treating for rats, you have to use unscented glue boards that are placed in their pathways that they will trip upon. These are two completely different biologies and two completely different treatment methods.”

To tell the difference between a rat and mouse infestation, Ellis noted that inspecting the feces being left behind is the key.

Mice feces tend to be very small with pointed ends, Ellis continued, where rats have larger feces with blunted ends that also appear to “glisten” when fresh.

“Mice have totally different anal glands and they’re much smaller,” Ellis explained. “Rodents, especially the roof rats and the Norwegian rats that we deal with here in Santa Clarita, have much larger poops.”

Ellis concluded, “At the end of the day, if you want to know what kind of (infestation) you’re dealing with, you’ve got to check out the poop. If you suspect you have a rodent infestation in your house, call us, mention this video, and we’ll give you a free inspection.”

  1. While Ellis is busy with his on-air show at KHTS – he should be knocking on the doors of Westfield and the few remaining tenants at the Valencia Town Center! Talk about making bank! WOW!

Can you imagine the number mice and rats that are finding their way around the mall and various stores?

Talk about the mice and rats having a “field day” at the mall – it’s an all you can eat buffet!

When the mall re-opens – would you buy any of the clothing items that have been hanging on the racks, sitting on tables and lying in cubes for two months, probably more?
