At Least One Killed In Fatal 5 Freeway Crash Near 14 Freeway

At least one individual was killed as a result of a crash on the southbound I-5 Freeway early Saturday morning, officials said.

Around 1 a.m. Saturday, officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department received reports of a crash on the southbound 5 Freeway truck lanes, just north of the 14 Freeway, according to LACoFD Supervisor Pittman.

“We got reports of an overturned vehicle with possible persons trapped,” Pittman said. “When we got on scene, we did find one vehicle overturned in the truck routes.”

Firefighters managed to free one person from the vehicle, who was taken to a nearby trauma center. Another individual died after succumbing to injuries suffered on scene, according to Pittman.

While officials could confirm the first fatality in the crash, they could not confirm the status of the person who was transported.

“There are some other news outlets that seem to be reporting more than one (fatality), but all I can confirm is that we did transport that one patient,” Pittman said.

A SIG-Alert was issued for the the southbound 5 Freeway truck lanes at around 1:20 a.m., and was lifted approximately four hours later at 5:23 a.m., according to officials with the California Highway Patrol.

The identity of the person who was killed in the crash was not made available, as officials work to notify the individual’s next of kin.
