UPDATE: One Killed, Two Minors Hospitalized In 14 Freeway Crash

A fatal 14 Freeway crash involving a tow truck sent a Lancaster family to the hospital and prompted a Sig Alert in Newhall Sunday evening.

UPDATE 9:45 a.m. Monday: A Castaic Tow flatbed truck was traveling northbound in the No.5 lane when it collided with the back of a 2015 Nissan containing a Lancaster family of four, according to Officer Josh Greenguard with the California Highway Patrol Newhall area office.

“The Nissan Sentra was disabled in lanes,” said Greenguard. “(The) mother died on scene.”

A 48-year-old Lancaster woman died at the scene. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The adult male driver of the Nissan, described as the father of the family by Greenguard, and a female minor were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
A teenage male patient was transported with major life-threatening injuries, according to Greenguard.

Alcohol or drugs are not suspected in the collision, according to CHP reports.

Original Story: Just before 6:40 p.m. Sunday, emergency responders received reports of a traffic collision involving a tow truck and a sedan on the northbound 14 freeway near Newhall Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol incident logs.

“We had four people in a passenger car that was struck by a tow truck. Three adults, one pediatric,” said Supervisor Ed Pickett with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Three trauma patients were transported to the hospital, with one reported fatality, however, the age of the victim was not immediately available, according to Pickett.

The tow truck experienced significant front end damage, while the black sedan it struck experienced significant back end damage consistent with the reported collision, per officials on scene.

A Sig Alert has been issued for 2 hours leaving only the HOV lane open on the northbound 14 Freeway at Newhall Avenue.

The identity of the victim was not available as of Sunday evening.
