Recovering from his injuries following a motorcycle crash where he “barely made it out alive,” former Major League Baseball player and dedicated Santa Clarita coach Bret Barberie is in need of donations to keep his coaching facilities afloat.
A GoFundMe has been set up for the beloved baseball coach as he recovers from his injuries, while the overhead costs of his facilities –that he has dedicated to young athletes across the Santa Clarita Valley– present financial difficulty.
“Brett Barberie has been serving youth baseball players for many years in the Santa Clarita Valley as a hitting coach,” read a statement from his GoFundMe. “He has been a mentor, a role model, and a huge positive influence on many lives.”
Barberie was riding his motorcycle alone in the mountains when he crashed and “barely made it out alive,” read a statement from the SoCal Mavericks.
The coach and former baseball player was admitted into the hospital where plates and pins were inserted into his leg during a surgery that has an expected recovery time of at least three months, according to the SoCal Mavericks.
“In addition to medical bills, he will have to cover the overhead costs of his facilities in order to keep them open during this time that he is unable to work,” read the GoFundMe.
The 54-year-old baseball coach graduated from the University of Southern California before becoming a professional baseball infielder in the 1990s for the Montreal Expos, Florida Marlins, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Cubs, according to officials.
“Let’s come together as a community and help lift some of his financial burden so he can quickly return to helping our youth,” read a final statement from his GoFundMe.
