Multiple People Injured, One Airlifted After Plunging 200 Feet Down Sand Canyon Road In Santa Clarita

Two people were hospitalized, and one was airlifted with a possible severed limb, after a two-vehicle crash sent both vehicles down Sand Canyon Road in Santa Clarita.

UPDATE (07/08/22): The two injured in the crash were both males, according to the Santa Clarita Valley Search and Rescue Team. One had a femur fracture and was airlifted to the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. The other sustained minor injuries and was retrieved by rope rescue, according to the SCV Search & Rescue Team.

Around 11:05 p.m. Wednesday, emergency responders received reports of a traffic collision over the side of Sand Canyon Road and Little Tujunga Canyon Road, just north of the eastbound Santa Clarita Truck Trail, according to spokesperson Diez with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“The vehicle went off the side of the road around 200 feet,” Diez said.

When emergency responders arrived on-scene, the driver and passenger of a silver Hyundai Sonata that traveled 200 feet down an embankment were extricated from their vehicle with major injuries – one with a possible partial amputation, according to witnesses.

“Two people were transported to the hospital– one by ambulance and one by airlift,” Diez said.

An overturned silver Volkswagen was also found off the side of Sand Canyon Road, but no parties were immediately transported to the hospital, according to the California Highway Patrol Incident Logs.

The exact cause of the traffic collision remains unknown as of 1 a.m. Thursday.
