One person was hospitalized after two separate traffic collisions involving a big rig sent two trucks toppling over the side of the freeway and onto the truck route.
About 6:40 a.m. Friday, emergency responders received reports of a traffic collison involving a semi-trailer blocking all lanes of the southbound truck route between the 5 Freeway and 14 Freeway in the Newhall Pass, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident logs.
The semi-trailer reportedly fell through the barrier from the northbound side of the freeway, toppling onto the truck route below just ahead of a tunnel, blocking the way, according to CHP.
“An off-duty police officer confirmed there was nobody trapped and no injuries,” said Robert Munoz, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Only about 30 minutes after the initial crash, as emergency crews worked to clear the scene, a second collision occurred at about 7:24 a.m. when another semi-truck also toppled over the side of the northbound freeway and onto the main crash scene below.
Dramatic video posted to social media caught the moment the second truck crashed over the side, landing directly on an unoccupied SUV that had been involved in the initial crash,
One person was sent to the hospital in unknown condition, according to Munoz.
A long-term SigAlert was issued due to the incident to allow the crash site to be cleared and approximately 30 to 40 gallons of spilled diesel fuel to be cleaned up, accordion to Munoz
