Two Passengers In Fatal 5 Freeway Crash Identified As Bakersfield Men

The two passengers that died in a 5 Freeway crash Monday that sent their vehicle 50 feet off the roadway have been identified.

On Wednesday, Isaac Maestas, 22 and Jordan Phillips 23, both from Bakersfield were identified as the two passengers that died in the solo-vehicle crash, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Ceyontay Bell, 24, of Bakersfield, was identified as the driver that died Monday afternoon when a vehicle went off the 5 Freeway north of Castaic

At about 4:29 p.m. Monday,  the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Newhall was notified of a traffic crash with injuries on the southbound 5 Freeway just south of Templin Highway, several miles north of Castaic, according to Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson of the Newhall CHP Area Office.

There, emergency responders discovered a 2001 Toyota Avalon with four occupants.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Bell was driving on the  I-5 south toward Templin Highway at a high rate of speed, per witnesses at the scene.

“Due to an unknown reason, (Bell) made an unsafe turning movement and ultimately collided with an ascending dirt embankment which caused the vehicle to go airborne and come to rest approximately 50 feet down the descending dirt embankment,” read a CHP report.

The two right lanes of the southbound 5 Freeway were closed for approximately 6 hours to investigate the crash.

Three other men from Bakersfield, all approximately between the ages of 25-30, were also in Bell’s vehicle at the time of the crash, according to CHP officials.

Bell, Phillips and Maestas died at the scene, and the fourth occupant was transported to Henry Mayo Hospital in critical condition. His condition as of Wednesday is unavailable to the media.

Anyone with information regarding this crash is encouraged to contact the investigating Officer C. Penza or the Public Information Officer, Officer Josh Greengard, at the CHP Newhall Area Office at (661) 600-1600.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
