A rotarian is someone involved in business, or ownership in the community, and decides to give back to their community, Lentini said.

“I’ve always believed that you should give back to your community, if you want your community to be better,” Lentini said.

Rotarians get very involved in all of the different projects in the community, in the country and around the world, he added. There are 1.3 million rotarians in the world.

Lentini was involved from a very young age with community groups, and in 1986 when a new breakfast rotary club started, he joined immediately.

He was president of the club from 1988 to 1989, and like other rotary presidents was given the opportunity to choose a community project for the club to work on.

His chosen project — a $10,000 rotary garden at the sports complex — caught the eye of community leaders and grew into a much larger project, totaling over $97,000.

“The garden is in the shape of the rotary symbol,” Lentini said. “ A few years ago we added a section that was dedicated to veterans that we have lost in action after 9/11.”

After his presidency Lentini moved on to a larger rotary club, and was then named the Veterans Chairman for the Rotary Club.

“We’re now considering a section that will be dedicated to Santa Clarita Valley veterans lost in Vietnam,” Lentini said. “Also one person that was killed in action in Korea.”

Lentini, combined with the elks lodge, made the Harry Bell Memorial.

“Harry was a great rotarian, but he was also a charter member of the Elks Lodge, and he is a figure in the Santa Clarita area and it’s growth into becoming a city,” Lentini said.

Lentini remembers Bell, who was killed in a plane crash in 2011, fondly.

“He was also a friend and a World War ll veteran,” Lentini added. “He is very much an icon in our eyes, with all of his donations and his contribution to the growth of our community and it’s members.”
