Thousands of American flags are expected to be placed at veterans’ final resting places across Eternal Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary this weekend for Santa Clarita’s Annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, officials said.
“On Saturday, we have a whole bunch of scouts from different troops. Boy scouts, girl scouts and eagle scouts will come to place thousands of flags on the veterans’ graves in Eternal Valley,” said Richard Nunally, spokesperson for Eternal Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary.
Eternal Valley is home to the remains of thousands of veterans throughout the park, and includes a Veteran Memorial Wall and veterans garden at the top of the memorial park with sweeping views of the Santa Clarita Valley.
The Veteran Memorial Wall is adorned with the names of more than 1,000 Santa Clarita veterans, which are each read by local high schoolers to close out the annual Memorial Day Ceremony.
This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. and is expected to feature a flyover, weather permitting; presentation of flags; color guard; a keynote address from Mike Garcia, U.S. Navy veteran of the Iraq War; and performances from the Santa Clarita Concert Band, including the armed forces salute and the playing of taps.
The event is typically attended by 1,500 to 2,000 people annually, according to Eternal Valley officials.
Last year’s ceremony specifically acknowledged the sacrifices of World War II veterans, while this year’s edition is expected to highlight those that served in the Korean War.
Parking is allowed throughout the cemetery for the event and shuttles are expected to be available to transport attendees to the cemetery.
Seating is expected to be available, but attendees are encouraged to wear hats to help mitigate the effects of any potential hot weather.
Eternal Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary is located at 23287 North Sierra Highway in Newhall.
