Cold Weather Alert Set For Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita has received a cold weather alert from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

After the National Weather Service released their seven-day forecast for Los Angeles County, the L.A. County Department of Public Health issued a cold weather alert for the area, including Santa Clarita.

From Tuesday through Wednesday, wind chill is expected to bring temperatures below 32 degrees, according to officials.

“Children, the elderly, and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during cold weather,” said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer. “Extra precaution should be taken to ensure they don’t get too cold when they are outside,”

Some precautions the department recommends taking include dressing in warm layers if headed outdoors by protecting heads, hands and feet with hats, gloves, scarves and socks.

People exposed to cold weather for prolonged periods can lose body heat and develop hypothermia. Symptoms vary depending on how long one is exposed to cold temperatures. Early symptoms of hypothermia include: shivering, fatigue, loss of coordination, and confusion and disorientation, according to an official statement from the L.A. County Dept of Public Health.

“There are places where people can go to stay warm, such as shelters or other public facilities,” Davis said. “We also want to remind people not to use stoves, barbeques or ovens to heat their homes due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.”

For those who may not have a warm place to stay, indoor public facilities such as shopping malls and libraries should be open, according to officials.

To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, only electric or natural gas heaters and fireplaces should be used to heat a home. Stoves, barbecues and ovens produce carbon monoxide, and should not be used as heaters, according to the L.A. County Dept of Public Health.

Los Angeles County residents and business owners, including people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs may also call 2-1-1 or visit this site for emergency preparedness information and other referral services 24 hours a day and seven days a week. For the deaf and hard of hearing, call the TDD line at 1-800-660-4026.
