Grapevine Could See Snow, Gusty Winds Through Thursday Evening

A storm system is expected to bring snow and gusty winds to the Grapevine Thursday evening; however, conditions are expected to remain dry in Santa Clarita, officials said.

A storm system is set to move in over the mountains, bringing moisture to the area, as well as snow and rain to higher elevations, said Ryan Kittell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“Areas to the south of the mountains won’t get any rain,” Kittell said.

As of Thursday morning, clouds are starting to move in and snow is expected to start falling during the later afternoon into early evening, according to officials.

“There is a 60 to 70 percent chance of precipitation with snow going down to 4,000 feet elevation this evening,” Kittell said.

The Grapevine is expected to get around an inch of snow, while the mountain communities could get up to two inches.

The California Highway Patrol is monitoring the situation.

The CHP cannot predict a closure of the 5 Freeway in Castaic due to extreme weather conditions until it happens, according to officials.

Although Santa Clarita is not expecting any rain, winds are expected to pick up Thursday evening through Friday, with gusts up to 30 mph, Kittell said.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
