Hurricane-Strength Winds Recorded In Mountains Near Santa Clarita

Wind speeds of 96 miles per hour, the strength of category two hurricane winds, were recorded at the Magic Mountain Truck Trail in the mountains east of Santa Clarita Monday morning.

At 6 a.m. on Monday, a Southern California Edison (SCE) weather site recorded the high wind speeds at the trail, according to the National Weather Service.

In the face of high winds currently pervading Santa Clarita and surrounding areas, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a red flag warning Monday morning “for strong northeast winds and very low relative humidity,” which is set to remain in effect through 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to the NWS.

Winds are expected to gain strength through this evening in areas where the warning has been issued, including Santa Clarita, officials said.

Strong wind gusts like those recorded Monday morning, ranging from 60 to 90 miles per hour, are also expected to continue in the mountains of Los Angeles County. Wind gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour are expected in wind-prone valleys, according to the NWS’s statement.

Due to the drying winds, humidity is expected to fall into the low single digits and remain low through Tuesday, officials added.

The combination of strong winds, low humidity and dry brush has created “the most dangerous fire weather conditions… since October 2019,” with conditions in Los Angeles County’s mountains being particularly unstable, read the NWS’s red flag warning.

Additionally, the NWS warns new fires in Los Angeles and Ventura counties will likely be particularly strong. Winds are expected to weaken starting Monday night and continuing into Tuesday afternoon.
